Men's Basketball Tames Yeomen in Home NCAC Victory

Mike Lamirand and the Blue Streaks fired up a nice home win

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS -- As a snowstorm raged outside, John Carroll Men's Basketball welcomed Oberlin College to the Tony DeCarlo Varsity Center for the first time in the 21st Century.

Shooting at a 46% clip while playing excellent defense helped the Blue Streaks come away with their first win at home in 2026. JCU now adds to their resume with a record of 12-4, 4-3 in North Coast Athletic Conference play.

John Carroll controlled much of the game against the Yeomen in an 86-69 victory.

The first half started off hot with both teams responding shot after shot. The first three minutes had each team draining a three and a two to add up to 10 points total through three minutes of play, with Luke Chicone leading the way for the Blue Streaks. 

With 15:47 left in the first half the tide turned with a steal from Chicone leading to an alley-oop to Kyle Irwin. A dominant press helped the Blue Streaks continue to build the lead early in the first. Head Coach Pete Moran '08 – using the lineup of Chicone, Zapolnik, Lamirand, Rose, and Chapman pressed the Yeomen into errors, forcing multiple turnovers leading straight to easy fast-break points. Zapolnik and Lamirand, heading the press, were aggressive and huge contributors off the bench midway through the first.

With Oberlin slowing the game down and settling into a 2-3 zone in half court possessions, they forced the Blue Streaks into outside shots, slowing down the Blue Streak offense for the time. Oberlin managed to keep the game close, with the Blue Streaks leading 38-33 at the 3:57 mark of the first.

Luke Chicone and Aidan Fitzgerald did strong work after the final media timeout, as John Carroll ended the half on a 10-5 run. JCU took a 10-point lead into the half, 48-38. Luke Chicone led the scoring at the half with 12 points.

The second half was all JCU, as the Blue Streaks dominated on the defensive end, leading to easy fast break points. Jack Zapolnik and Mike Lamirand led the way on the press, as they each contributed with a combined 4 steals and 17 points off the bench. The Blue Streaks came out of a media timeout with a 9-5 run to get the game just about out of reach.

With the Yeomen in foul trouble throughout the entire game and the Blue Streaks shooting the ball well enough at the free-throw line, the game was finished. Luke Chicone led all scoring with 24 points, followed by Aidan Fitgerald with 12. 

Brandon Rose had a big contribution off the bench as well, helping defensively and also scoring 10 points against a much taller Oberlin lineup.

"We've had too many home losses so we knew we had to come out and get a win," said Rose. "We just used our speed, as we knew we were faster, so we used our speed to our advantage. We have had two great wins the last two games, now we have a tough matchup on Saturday. We're ready for it at home, we want to carry over the momentum."

John Carroll will remain at home, hosting Denison in an NCAC matchup on Saturday at 3 pm after the women's game.
