Slow Shooting Day Dooms Men's Basketball, Ending 5-Game Win Streak

A rare day of unfriendly irons caused JCU to fall at home depsite Chicone's milestone

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS – Slow shooting down the stretch doomed John Carroll Men's Basketball in front of a large home crowd at the Tony DeCarlo Varsity Center on Saturday.

In a season-low season output offensively – marking the first time scoring less than 79 points in a game – the Blue Streaks faltered against DePauw University,

With the 68-64 loss, John Carroll drops to 15-5 overall, 7-4 in North Coast Athletic Conference play.

DePauw started off strongly enough, ahead by a few in the early going. With just under 13 minutes to play, Mike Lamirand hit a triple to initiate a 17-6 run. JCU enjoyed a 29-20 lead at the under-8 media timeout.

A Sean Collins jumper late ensured the Blue Streaks entered halftime ahead, 37-28. John Carroll has enjoyed plenty of strong first halves this season, and today was a perfect example of the team's trademark strong starts.

Luke Chicone was all over the floor throughout the first half, racking up 12 points and 5 assists. With a layup halfway through the first half, Chicone eclipsed 1,500 points for his career as a Blue Streak. Chicone achieved the feat just two days following the funeral and celebration of life for his beloved grandmother and matriarch of the Moran Family, JoAnne Moran.

Kyle Irwin and the Blue Streaks came out of halftime firing, with a triple on the opening possession. But the 3-ball soon dried up for John Carroll. DePauw found a way to slowly narrow the lead, finding a second wind. The Tigers trimmed the deficit to just one point, 49-48, near the midpoint of the second half, thanks to a 20-7 run.

Even without much success shooting the ball, John Carroll did enough to maintain the lead. Namely, Chicone made a circus drive to the bucket on a highlight play. The graduate student powered the offense with some help from Lamirand.

The Blue Streaks managed to remain ahead until the 2:15 mark when the Tigers tied it up at 61-61. Following an offensive rebound on the following possession, JCU took a timeout to regroup. The Blue Streaks couldn't get anything going on offense, while DePauw sank a banked 3-pointer with 44.1 seconds left.

With less than a minute left in the game, the Blue Streaks fought to regain the lead. However, after several missed shots and DePauw sinking four foul shots given to them, the Tigers pulled ahead and took the victory 68-64.

Chicone led the Blue Streaks in two areas with 26 points and 6 rebounds, putting in the work to support the rest of the team with 6 assists.

The stats tell some interesting tales. For example, John Carroll won the turnover battle by a whopping 18-3 margin. In 11 conference games, the Blue Streaks have made fewer than 9 3-pointers just twice. The opponent in both of those games? DePauw.

The culprit overall in the defeat was a season-low 33.3% effort in field goal percentage, as JCU's previous low-water mark was 40.8% vs. Transylvania way back in late November.
