Women's Basketball Defeats DePauw For Third Straight NCAC Win

The Blue Streaks earned a great victory at home thanks to strong play late

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS -- A physically defensive game with timely three-point shooting spelled success on Saturday.

John Carroll Women's Basketball picked up an important win at the Tony DeCarlo Varsity Center.

The Blue Streaks stood strong late for a 59-50 victory over DePauw University, advancing to 17-2 overall, 6-2 in North Coast Athletic Conference play.

The first quarter started slow, both teams fighting to find their footing offensively. The scoreboard remained bare for the first three minutes of the game, before DePauw put up the first points of the game.

JCU's Graci Semptimphelter got the ball rolling offensively, scoring a layup after a quick steal assist from Carly Perusek. As both teams fell into rhythm, fouls slowed by the defensive push did not. The score remained stagnant before another lead shifted to the Tigers midway through the second quarter, which didn't last long before Carly Perusek made a great steal, passing the ball for Erin McCormick for a three to take the lead.

DePauw managed to tie the game thanks to some success at the foul line, but Semptimphelter answered with another 3 from the top of the key. The Tigers maintained the lead going into half, up by one point, 27-26.

Coming back from the half, the Blue Streaks were determined to retake the lead. Brooke Laub connected on a triple for the first score of the half, and John Carroll never relinquished the lead for the rest of the game. JCU continued to play excellent defense and started to find small openings in the DePauw defense.

At the six-minute mark of the fourth, Tori Allen of DePauw hit a three pointer to make the score 43-39 in favor of JCU. On the following possession, Laub drove the paint, kicked it out to Semptimphleter, who connected on a three pointer, getting the entire DeCarlo Center on their feet.

A couple minutes later, Ava Ryncarz converted a nice and-one play to extend the lead to 10 points. With the way the JCU defense was playing, no comeback would be forthcoming. Outscoring the Tigers by seven in the fourth, the Blue Streaks took the victory with a 59-50, extending their conference win streak to three games.

With four triples, Semptimphelter led all scorers with 17 points plus a team-best 3 assists. Ryncarz nearly achieved a double double with 11 points and 8 rebounds.
