Battling Bishops Beat Men's Basketball in First Home Game of 2026

The Blue Streaks scuffled late in the first half and early in the second

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS – Sometimes you're the hammer, sometimes you're the nail.

John Carroll Men's Basketball struggled at home on Wednesday in the first game of 2026 at the Tony DeCarlo Varsity Center.

A strong shooting day by Ohio Wesleyan keyed a 106-90 victory for the Battling Bishops. With the defeat, JCU drops to 10-4 overall, 2-3 in North Coast Athletic Conference play.

The first portion of the opening half was evenly played, though the Blue Streaks enjoyed the lead for much of the way. Kyle Irwin contributed in the early going and Aidan Fitzgerald fired home a couple triples, the latter of which propelled JCU to a 31-27 lead.

Down the stretch of the first half, the Battling Bishops took control. As JCU went cold from the field, OWU went on a 19-8 run in the final seven minutes of the half. The Battling Bishops took a 46-39 lead into the break.

A 7-point run by the Battling Bishops coming out of halftime led to a JCU timeout just 54 seconds into the second half. This early run set the tone, despite a Luke Chicone triple after the timeout. Ohio Wesleyan galloped to a 16-5 run over the next three-plus minutes, ballooning the lead to 69-47 with 15:25 to play.

Back-to-back triples by Chicone and Mike Lamirand threatened to turn the game on its head, but then OWU replied with a 3-pointer.

Try as the Blue Streaks might to get back in the game, JCU could not get within single digits to make it a game. The key for the Battling Bishops was a clear advantage in the paint. While the rebounds were even, OWU won the battle in the paint in terms of points and scored 18 points at the charity stripe. OWU also scored 22 points off turnovers compared to JCU's 9 (each team had 13 turnovers).

Luke Chicone led the team with 16 points, followed by Sean Collins with 15 and Aidan Fitzgerald with 14 points.
