Men's Basketball Dominates Owls in Bounceback NCAC Win

The Blue Streaks got big efforts from Kasey Hunt and Luke Chicone

GAMBIER, Ohio -- After a tough loss at home earlier this week, the Blue Streaks were in need of a response.

And respond they did, as John Carroll Men's Basketball hit the road and came away with a huge victory, beating Kenyon College, 88-67.

John Carroll took a quick 4-0 lead thanks to baskets down low from Luke Chicone and Kasey Hunt. Kenyon did not back down as they quickly responded and took a 4-point lead going into the first media timeout. The teams exchanged scores until an Aidan Fitzgerald three put the Streaks back ahead. A pair of Hunt free throws extended the lead and from there, it was all Blue Streaks

Mike Lamirand and Jack Zapolnik connected on threes on consecutive possessions and a trip to the free throw line for Chicone gave John Carroll their first double digit lead of the day. Once again, Lamirand and Zapolnik buried shots from deep as the Blue Streaks carried a 17-point lead into the under-4 media timeout.

Layups from Hunt, Sean Collins, and Chicone would close out the first half scoring for the visitors as the Blue and Gold went into the locker room with a 50-31 lead.

The second half was no different from the first, as Hunt scored 8 straight points to extend the lead. Chicone continued to contribute as John Carroll found themselves with a 25 point lead with 16 ½ minutes to go.

The teams spent the next seven minutes exchanging scores as Kenyon made their best effort to battle back but were never able to get within under 20. An 8-0 Blue Streak run was capped off by a Kyle Irwin dunk to lift the John Carroll lead to 28 in what was essentially the dagger. A Zapolnik layup got the lead up to 30 as the two sides began to sub in the depth of their benches.

Neither offense had much luck in the final minutes as a three from Tyree Turner and a putback layup from Peyton Budrys-Rini, his first collegiate points, closed out the scoring for the day.

No surprise here as once again it was Chicone and Hunt leading the way as Chicone finished with 25 points, 5 rebounds, and 6 assists while Hunt poured in an additional 24 points.

"We made a promise to ourselves that we were going to win today and like Eleven says in Stranger Things, 'friends don't lie,'" said Chicone while talking about today's win.

With today's win, the Blue Streaks get back to .500 in NCAC play as they begin the new semester.
