Women's Soccer Battles to a Draw with Kenyon in Home Finale

The Blue Streaks remain in title and tournament contention

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS – The last match of the regular season at Don Shula Stadium for John Carroll Women's Soccer lived up to the promise.

In a rematch of last year's North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament Semifinal, JCU and Kenyon battled to a 1-1 tie.

The Blue Streaks scored a fantastic goal later in the first half, but the Owls responded with an impressive goal of their own.

John Carroll now stands 2-1-2 in NCAC play with two matches left to go. A share of the conference crown is still in reach. On Saturday, the Blue Streaks will play The College of Wooster, the top team in the NCAC standings. It would take a win over Wooster plus a victory at Oberlin, and a tie in the Kenyon-Wooster match

Brooke Berkowitz was all over the field in the early going, creating chances left and right. But much as the sophomore was willing the Blue Streaks to score, Kenyon's defense remained firm.

JCU also threatened on a pair of corner kicks. But Kenyon's wall of defenders turned away the chances.

Kenyon began to poke and prod at JCU's defenses, getting a couple shots through. An odd-woman rush was also turned away by the Blue Streaks.

In the 35th minute, the Blue Streaks broke through. A marvelous Julia Niehaus free kick found the head of Ella Wilgor. The Medina native's second goal of the season marked just the seventh goal allowed by Kenyon all season, and just the second in five conference games.

Madison Skeese made five saves in the first half. Shots were close, but JCU's lone shot on net was the goal.

Kenyon pressured JCU at the start of the half. The Owls sent in some shots on goal, but the hosts stood strong. Until the 70th minute.

Kenyon's Emily Copeland, one of the most lethal scorers in the conference, created some space. On a lofting, unstoppable goal, the Bishop Watterson grad knotted the game with her fantastic shot.

The teams traded chances down the stretch, at times at a frenetic pace. Most of the opportunities flew wide or high, but each team made a save to preserve the tie.

Shots stood just about even, with Kenyon holding a 14-13 advantage, 8-5 in shots on goal. Madison Skeese made 7 saves in the draw.
