Women's Soccer Drops to Wittenberg to Begin NCAC Play

Gracie Villwock scored a late goal, but a tough end of the first half spelled doom for JCU

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS – A new season began in essence for John Carroll Women's Soccer on Saturday.

Unfortunately, the beginning of North Coast Athletic Conference play stood as a continuation of the non-conference results.

The Blue Streaks dropped a 2-1 result against Wittenberg University on a beautiful Saturday afternoon at Don Shula Stadium. 

The first 30 minutes of the match were marked by plenty of opportunities for John Carroll. The Blue Streaks poked and prodded at the Tigers' defense repeatedly. Brooke Berkowitz, the conference leader in goals, tested the Tigers on a number of promising chances.

But despite throwing all they could at Wittenberg, the hosts could not find the back of the net. 

Late in the half, the Tigers counterattacked with fury.

In the 40th minute, the Tigers worked it up the left side. A passback and quick kick led to Wittenberg's opening salvo. The goal was a rocket shot, as the keeper didn't have much of a chance. 

The first goal was tough, but disaster struck just a couple minutes later. Off a Wittenberg cornerkick, JCU's keeper got a piece, but Caroline Stupp fired it past a wall of defenders and into the back of the net for a 2-0 lead. 

JCU finished the first half with a 15-3 advantage in shots, but Wittenberg notched four saves. 

The second stanza was much less eventful. JCU's attacks did not reach the intended target in the opening portion of the half. The Tigers managed to fend off the furious attempts by the hosts to get a goal back.

At long last in the 84th minute, the Blue Streaks got on the board. Brooke Berkowitz tapped a pass back to Lucy Kuerbis, who lofted a long pass down the right flank to Gracie Villwock. The sophomore got off a beautiful, arching shot while falling forward, beating the keeper high.

JCU's goal swung the momentum pendulum back in the Blue Streaks' favor. But while the hosts fought hard to get a chance to even up the game, the Tigers kept the ball out of harm's way.

For the match, the Blue Streaks finished with a wide 20-6 margin in shots.

The Blue Streaks head to Denison University on Tuesday for a rematch of the NCAC title bout a year ago.
