Denison Defeats Shorthanded Men's Soccer

An early red card forced JCU to play a man down, but the visitors gave the Big Red a run for their money

GRANVILLE – An early conference test presented itself on Wednesday evening for John Carroll Men's Soccer.

The Denison Big Red, picked to finish second in the North Coast Athletic Conference and ranked #21 in the nation, welcomed the Blue Streaks to their large pitch.

All in all, the Blue Streaks put up a great fight. But it was not meant to be, as JCU dropped a 2-1 decision.

For all but 18 minutes of the match, the Blue Streaks played a man down. A handball in the box led to a red card for John Carroll. Great teams do not fail to take advantage of opportunities, and Denison did not, burying the penalty kick.

Despite being down a man, the Blue Streaks did not allow the Big Red to control possession all half. Rather, Denison enjoyed some opportunities, but do did the Blue Streaks, as the visitors got some solid chances. But the match stood deadlocked at half.

Early in the second half, the Blue Streaks got back on level ground. Dylan Halm slipped Nic Slagle through and the first year struck a shot across the goal far post. It was an awesome goal for the Northville, Michigan native, as well as his collegiate first.

The hosts clawed back into the lead just a few minutes later, though, as Jack Rice found twine.

The Blue Streaks sought an equalizer as the half continued and eventually wound down, but Denison turned away the chances. The teams also traded yellow cards down the stretch.

Overall for the half, the chances were close, as each team tallied 6 shots in the second half. Bryce Sampson played the full 90 minutes in net for the visitors, making 3 saves for the day.

A number of Blue Streaks played the full 90, which was most certainly a hard fought match the whole way.

Next Up
