Men's Lacrosse Struggles in Season Opener in Berea

The Blue Streaks ran out of gas in the fourth quarter

BEREA -- Even though John Carroll switched into the North Coast Athletic Conference for the 2026 season, the historical rivalry with Baldwin Wallace stayed on the schedule.

The Blue Streaks traveled to Berea on a chilling Saturday afternoon, looking to start their season with a positive note before heading to Colorado for a spring break bout.

Despite the first half of the game being a close battle, the Yellow Jackets handed the Blue Streaks a 15-6 defeat, marked by a dominant fourth-quarter performance.

From the start, it was clear this would be a high-scoring game as the first quarter opened with nine unsuccessful shots from both teams. The Blue Streaks were the first to make their mark on the scoreboard as junior Braden Zarek picked up his own missed shot and put it back in the net to put John Carroll up 1-0.

Baldwin Wallace responded quickly and with force as junior Paxton Allison put two in the net off of Evan Vetter's faceoff victories. The Yellow Jackets made the score 2-1 in their favor, and the Blue Streaks were looking to respond. The end of the first gave a myriad of good offense as first-year Cameron Miller put up his first career goal, moving left to right, throwing off the defense, and veteran senior Josh Lombardo added another, assisted by junior Larry Voss. The Yellow Jackets wanted one more before the clock ran out as junior Noah Dodgion added the tying goal, assisted by senior Reichen Geiselhart. At the end of the first, the score was 3-3, showing an aggressive offensive battle.

The second quarter slowed down with both teams making more intentional moves. The Yellow Jackets had a lot of time on offense to start, which resulted in a goal by senior Jake Koonmen, assisted by Geiselhart, and another from senior Nate Hoover, putting the score at 5-3 in favor of the Yellow Jackets. The Blue Streaks needed to respond heading into halftime, and senior Brody Forrest did just that as the long stick defender slammed one into the net off a pass from junior Noah Osmanski. With just a one-goal differential in the 5-4 score, Dodgion put the last shot of the first half into the back of the net, assisted by Hoover. At halftime, Baldwin Wallace was up 6-4 against John Carroll.

As the second half began, the Yellow Jackets found themselves with a goal in the first six seconds as Vetter found Dodgion off a faceoff victory, putting the score at 7-4. As it began to get darker outside, and the wind was ripping, both teams slowed down, and the game went scoreless until the five-minute mark when junior Casey LaForce gave energy back to the Blue Streaks, picking up another goal and making the score 7-5. The Yellow Jackets did not let the Blue Streaks get comfortable, though, as Dodgion put another one in to end the third with a score of 8-5.

The Yellow Jackets were in control in the fourth quarter as Allison, Dodgion, Vetter, Didiz, Trout, and Geiselhart put up a combined 7 goals. Despite a nice goal from Zarek, assisted by sophomore Sean Hogan, Baldwin Wallace took the game home in the fourth with a final score of 15-6.
