Blue Streaks Post Dramatic Comeback in Schweickert Field Debut

Brett Krugman crushed two homers to orchestrate a memorable win over RIT in the home opener

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS – You couldn't have asked for a much better home debut.

Down five runs heading into the seventh, John Carroll Baseball (3-0) unleashed a huge comeback highlighted by Brett Krugman's breakout game.

John Carroll surprised RIT, 12-10, in the first game of the season at Schweickert Field.

John Carroll showcased strong patience to start the home opener. Following a pair of walks, Brett Krugman hit an absolute bomb over the wall in left center field. His first homer as a Blue Streak also marked JCU's first of the season.

Jake Monaco's excellent baserunning pushed the lead to four runs in the second inning. The New Jersey native got aboard on a hit by pitch and stole second. A high throw by the catcher on his steal of third base scored the sophomore.

RIT responded with thunderous efforts in the third and fourth innings. A 3-run homer over the wall in right field hurt especially, rocketing the Tigers ahead, 8-4. A Brett Krugman sacrifice fly got one run back in the fifth. But the Tigers hit a ground-rule double to center in the top of the sixth, upping the lead to 10-5. A Chris Bach RBI single got the run back in the seventh.

Meanwhile, Michael Perry checked into the game and locked down the Tigers for two innings to keep the door open.

JCU authored an incredible inning in the eighth. Monaco got the party started with a walk. Back-to-back singles by Dylan Sowers and Jordan Suvak got one run home. After a pitching change, George Haracz drew a walk. Then Michael Pollard clipped a single in front of the center fielder to score both Sowers and Suvak.

And so, Krugman stepped up to the plate with two on and one out. The Saint Ignatius alum delivered bigtime, clobbering a no doubter dinger off the trees in left field.

With a two-run lead left and three outs to get, Manager Bobby Bell turned to his veteran, Austin Miller. The experienced righty allowed a baserunner, but slammed the door shut with a pair of strikeouts.

Krugman stood as the hero at the dish, finishing 3-for-4 with a double, two homers, and 7 RBIs. Suvak and Bach both had two-hit games.
