Baseball Beats Mount Union to Advance to 4-0

The Blue Streaks are 4-0 for the first time since 2019

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS – Not much is better than beating a rival on your home turf.

John Carroll Baseball did just that at Schweickert Field on Saturday afternoon, firing past the University of Mount Union, 7-5.

With the bats doing great work again, the Blue Streaks will head down to Florida with a 4-0 record. John Carroll last started a season with four wins in 2019.

"I'm excited to see our guys with so much energy early in the season," said Manager Bobby Bell. "We scheduled tough early to see what we could do. We climbed back in both games this weekend. Hopefully we can carry this momentum with us to Florida."

Mount Union scored first thanks to an unearned run in the first frame. The Purple Raiders added another unearned run in the third and an earned run in the fourth. But then the Blue Streaks bit back in the bottom of the third inning. Back-to-back singles by George Haracz and Chris Bach began things. Following a lineout, Konner Hauck singled to center to score Haracz. Patrick Sherman walked to load the bases. A fielding error by Mount Union then proved costly, plating a pair of runs to even it up.

JCU kept it going in the fourth, beginning again with singles by Haracz and Bach. A Sherman hit by pitch scored Haracz before Eric Krowl did a job, scoring a run on a sacrifice fly.

Kiayuan Baskerville handed the rock over to Roger Simon for the sixth with a 2-run lead. The veteran allowed a run by the bats had his back. Singles by Brett Krugman and Hauck plated two more runs, upping the margin to three runs.

Simon allowed a run in the eighth and a leadoff single in the ninth, otherwise pitching well. Bell turned to Austin Miller for the second straight day as the closer, and the Aurora, Illinois native delivered. Miller garnered a 5-4-3 doubleplay and then a 4-3 groundout to end any thoughts of a Purple Raider comeback for his second save in as many days.

Chris Bach led the offense from the cleanup spot, finishing 3-for-5 with a 3-for-5 effort with two runs. Haracz notched two hits and three walks in a flawless day. JCU drew 8 walks and one hit by pitch.
