Blue Streaks Fly Past Hope in Competitive Non-conference Match

HOLLAND, MI - The John Carroll women's lacrosse team earned a massive non-conference victory against undefeated Hope College. The Flying Dutchmen were a perfect 4-0 heading into Saturday afternoon's showdown, however JCU earned a 13-12 win, as Anna Vaccarelli totaled seven points.

Hope started the afternoon scoring the first two goals and things might have looked bleak early. However, the Blue and Gold responded as Abby Cassidy notched her fourth goal of the year. Cassidy would not be done, as the Medina native tied the game at 2-2 with the woman up goal.

Less than a minute later, Vaccarelli took advantage of the woman up opportunity and gave JCU a 3-2 edge.

The Flying Dutchmen would tie the game with a goal a few minutes later in the first period. It looked like the score would be tied after the first period, but Kathleen Cagney found the back of the net to give JCU a 4-3 lead after one.

In the second period, JCU started off on the right foot as Cassidy, Vaccarelli, and Riley Knapp scored to put the Blue and Gold up 7-3.

Entering the locker rooms, John Carroll held a 8-4 edge on the scoreboard and recorded 17 shots compared to Hope's 12.

The Flying Dutchmen would cut the deficit in half in the third period trailing 10-8 with the final 15 minutes to go.

With 10:24 Hope scored another goal to make the score 11-10. Roughly 30 seconds later Kira Keenan gave JCU an insurance goal.

As time continued to tick down Vaccarelli notched another goal and gave John Carroll a 13-10 advantage.

The Vaccarelli goal was crucial, as the Flying Dutchmen would score two goals to make the score 13-12 with 4:45 remaining.

Credit to the John Carroll defense and Josephine Lawler who held strong and would not allow another goal in the final stretch.

John Carroll will be back in action March 18th against Nazareth University with a start time of 5 p.m.
