Vaccarelli is in the midst of a breakout sophomore season

CLEVELAND – A sophomore breakout is stealing the headlines for John Carroll Women's Lacrosse.

Following a huge win at Hope College on Saturday, JCU's newest star has won an accolade from the North Coast Athletic Conference.

Anna Vaccarelli is the NCAC Athlete of the Week for Women's Lacrosse.

The Blue Streaks upended the previously undefeated Flying Dutch in Holland, Michigan on Saturday. Vaccarelli provided the eventual game-winning goal as JCU held off a furious rally by Hope late in the game.

Vaccarelli is one of the top stories of the season for JCU. After not seeing the field as a first year, the Medina native has scored goals in four games, starting the last three games. The attack enjoyed a true breakthrough on Saturday.

The Medina Bee scored her first goal late in the first quarter on a woman-up goal and was off to the races from there. She found the back of the net with 8 seconds left in the first half to set the margin at 8-4 heading into the break. Vaccarelli potted one goal apiece in the third and fourth quarters, the latter tally standing as the eventual game-sealing goal.

On the year, the sophomore stands second on the team with 10 goals. Vaccarelli also has 8 assists this year, including two on Saturday.

Vaccarelli and the Blue Streaks have two home games upcoming, hosting Nazareth on Wednesday and Fredonia on Saturday.
