In Fascinating Doubleheader, Softball Splits with Albion

JCU lost the opening game in a 10-inning walkoff and held on for a win in game two

ALBION, Mich. – It was a wacky day of softball for John Carroll Softball in Michigan.

The first game of a doubleheader at Albion College needed 10 innings, and the latter contest came down to a bang-bang force play with the bases loaded.

All things considered, it was a good day for John Carroll, as the Blue Streaks managed a split. JCU dropped the opening game in walkoff fashion, 2-1, before hanging on for a dramatic 8-7 win in game two.

Game 1
The teams traded jabs in the first inning before the bats fell silent.

Back-to-back doubles by Izzy Coode and Jordan Anderson with 2 outs plated the first run of the game. But the Brits responded quickly, scoring an unearned run to knot the ballgame at 1-1.

Emily Graves settled in for John Carroll, stranding several runners in the early going. Gayle Mishic saved a run by nailing a runner trying to score from third on a flyout in the third inning.

JCU got a runner to third in the third frame on an error, but otherwise struggled to get runners aboard. A Melissa Smith one-out double in the seventh threatened to break the scoreless tie, but JCU couldn't scratch across a run. Emily Graves singled to start the eighth and got to third on a pair of groundouts, but got stuck at third.

After six strong innings, Graves gave way to Jordan Anderson in the seventh. The George Mason transfer turned in some strong work, including in the ninth inning, stranding a runner at third with an inning-ending flyout to left.

But the Britons finally broke through the 10th, scoring on a poor throw to third following a 5-3 groundout.

Game 2
Albion got on the board first in the bottom of the opening frame thanks to a trio of singles, which led to two runs. But John Carroll responded in kind in the following frame.

A fielder's choice, Albion error, and Bella Carcioppolo single loaded the bases with two outs. Elizabeth Hohlefelder found dirt between the shortstop and third baseman to score JCU's first run. Izzy Coode then whizzed a single right past the pitcher to plate two more runs. Finally, a Jordan Anderson blooper single to shallow centerfield upped the JCU lead to 4-2.

The visitors added two more runs in the third. Hohlefelder plated a second RBI with a sharp hit to shortstop and nice baserunning by Carcioppolo to beat the throw. Izzy Coode then drew a bases-loaded walk for the second run of the inning.

The Britons seemed to deal the Blue Streaks a crushing blow with a whopper of a fifth inning, scoring five runs to retake the lead at last, 7-6. But the best was still in store in a wacky seventh inning.

With one out, Melissa Smith crushed a beautiful double to deep left field to score the tying run. A couple batters later, Carcioppolo slotted a single through the left side to plate the go-ahead run.

In the bottom of the seventh, things got real interesting. Albion managed to load the bases with two outs. A meekly hit groundball found the glove of Elaina Rodriguez, and the senior made the smart play of dashing to third for the forceout. Rodriguez beat the runner, ending the ballgame.

Casey Cash got the win in the circle, pitching 1.1 innings of scoreless relief. Nine Blue Streaks tallied hits, including a 3-for-5 day at the dish with 2 RBIs for Hohlefelder.

Next Up
John Carroll will return home, hoping to host Thiel College on Monday at 1 pm for the home opener at Bracken Field if the weather cooperates.
