Men's Lacrosse Defeated by Denison in NCAC Clash

The Big Red, titans of the NCAC for many a year, dealt JCU a defeat thanks to a big time third quarter

GRANVILLE, Ohio – The start of the game was even, but a crushing third quarter led to a defeat at Denison University, a powerhouse of the North Coast Athletic Conference.

John Carroll Men's Lacrosse lost a 16-8 decision at the Big Red on Saturday afternoon.

JCU trailed at halftime by just a few goals, 6-3, before the wheels came off in the third quarter.

The scoring opened near the midpoint of a defensive-minded first quarter with a Denison opening shot. Braden Zarek fired back less than 90 seconds later with JCU's opening tally. The Big Red found twine twice in the following two minutes. William Dunn slotted home a big goal with just 3 ticks on the clock in the first quarter off a Sean Hogan pass.

Josh Lombardo scored a pretty goal with 8:16 left in the second to tie the game. In the final five minutes of the period, the hosts found the back of the net three times to double up John Carroll.

Despite the deficit, JCU had to be feeling good about the slim margin heading into half. After all, Denison has lost just three conference games in five years and has finished first or second in the conference standings every year since 2011.

Devin Holder played particularly well in the game's opening salvo, as the Saint Ignatius goalie provided some great saves (nine to be exact).

The third quarter was the Blue Streaks' undoing. Denison outscored JCU, 6-1, powered by winning 7-of-7 faceoffs along with 6 turnovers by the visitors. Dominating possession time, the Big Red put the game out of reach in the third.

The Blue Streaks did not surrender down the stretch, however, matching Denison in an even fourth quarter. Lombardo and Dunn both achieved hat tricks for JCU.

Holder held his own, making a career-high 18 saves in the defeat.
