Pair of Sixth Inning Slides Doom Softball to Sweep at Kenyon

The Blue Streaks lost a pair of close games to the Owls

GAMBIER, Ohio – The sixth inning proved to be a mixed blessing for John Carroll Softball in the first North Coast Athletic Conference games in program history.

In both games of the road doubleheader at Kenyon College, the Blue Streaks grabbed the lead in the top of the sixth inning, only for things to fall apart in the bottom of the sixth.

John Carroll lost both games to the Owls, 5-3 and 10-7.

Game 1
An Izzy Coode RBI groundout with two outs in the first inning got the visitors on the board to start the game.

Emily Graves looked strong in the early going, not allowing a baserunner into scoring position in a swift first four innings of work. But with two outs in the fifth, misfortune struck the senior. Two JCU errors allowed the hosts to take a 2-1 lead.

Undeterred, John Carroll thundered back in the following half-inning. A Coode single up the middle and a Kenyon error set two ducks on the pond for Bella Hunter. The Case Western Reserve transfer didn't disappoint, doubling to score both runners.

After Graves allowed a 1-out double in the sixth, the JCU bullpen was called into action. The Owls didn't mind, drawing a walk and a single. Aided by a pair of errors, the Owls snuck ahead, 5-3. JCU could not respond, going in order in the seventh.

Game 2
After the teams struggled to get the bats going in the opener, the second game featured no lack of hitting. In fact, the teams combined for a whopping 29 hits.

The Owls came out hacking, tearing the cover off the ball for 6 hits in the first inning, good enough for 4 runs.

Undaunted, John Carroll chipped away at the lead. Elaina Rodriguez clubbed an RBI double to left in the second. The visitors plated two more in the third, the latter on a Jordan Anderson sacrifice fly.

In the fateful sixth inning, John Carroll broke through in a huge 4-run inning. Emily Graves walked and Bella Carcioppolo got aboard on an error to set the table for Elizabeth Hohlefelder . The sophomore clipped a single down the left field line, scoring Graves. Smart baserunning aided JCU, as the Blue Streaks took bases on throws several times. A Coode RBI single to center and an Anderson 2-run shot up the middle set the score at 7-4. A Kenyon pitching change ended the damage.

Kristin Dems limited the damage in the second through fifth innings, stranding Owls on the basepaths each frame, but escaping unscathed every time until the sixth.

The hosts tabbed a double and a single to start the sixth, leading to a call to the bullpen. For a second straight game, the 'pen could not match up with Kenyon. A wild pitch and three singles tied the ballgame at 7-7. A JCU error critically allowed the game-winning run to cross, and a 2-run triple by the next batter added to the lead.

Again, the multi-run lead could not be overcome by JCU in the seventh.

Next Up
John Carroll will hit the road again on Tuesday, continuing a 6-game road swing. The next destination will be Otterbein University for a non-conference doubleheader at 3 and 5 pm in Westerville, Ohio.
