Blue Streaks Walk It Off In Game Two to Complete Sweep of Little Giants

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS The John Carroll baseball team earned a sweep on a sunny Sunday afternoon at Schweickert Field. Game one was highlighted by a strong pitching performance, while game to was a suspenseful finish with a walk-off hit.

John Carroll improves to 13-6 on the year and 2-0 in the North Coast Athletic Conference.

GAME ONE: (JCU - 4, Wabash - 1)

At the start of the second inning, Brett Krugman confidently approached the dish. The designated hitter got a hold of a ball, hitting a screeching liner that hugged the left field line. Krugman's homerun pitch bounced once off the grass beyond the wall and into the street. The Saint Ignatius product's dinger marked his fifth of the season.

John Carroll began the third with a Dylan Sowers double to left center. In stepped George Haracz, and the junior fired his first collegiate homer, a laser over the wall in right field. JCU wasn't done, as Chris Bach scored on a wild pitch after getting aboard on a single. JCU enjoyed a 4-0 lead through four.

Frank Freeman dabbled with trouble in the first three innings, stranding a runner in each frame, including men at the corners in the third and the fourth. The senior from Chicago gave way to Kiayuan Baskerville for the fifth inning following a scoreless 4-inning start.

In the seventh, the Little Giants threatened to make it a brand new ballgame. Wabash loaded the bases with two outs and hung a crooked number on the board thanks to a hit by pitch. But Baskerville struck out the next batter to end the threat.

GAME TWO: (JCU - 7, Wabash - 6)

In the top of second, Parker Smith of Wabash hammered a ball to deep center field and one-hopped to the fence to bring across the first run of game two.

Two batters later, Landen Basey hit a ground-rule double giving the Little Giants a 2-0 lead.

Jake Monaco made the play of the afternoon in the top of the third inning by making a phenomenal sliding stop in the gap and getting to his feet to throw the runner out at first base.

Jordan Suvak turned on the first pitch of the third inning and put the ball on Washington boulevard and gave JCU its first run of the game.

Christopher Salek tied the game in the fourth inning by hitting a double to left-center field and scoring Brett Krugman.

Suvak nearly got picked off in the fifth, but the senior had a slick slide to avoid being tagged out at second base.

George Haracz brought Suvak home with an RBI single to left-center field and gave JCU a 3-2 advantage.

Krugman added to the two-out rally with a line drive down the left field line to score both Ethan Glossa and Haracz, as the Blue and Gold led 5-2 after five innings of action.

Michael Perry came on in relief and threw 2.2 strong innings before being pulled midway through the seventh inning.

With the bases loaded and two outs, Drew Walker stepped onto the mound and recorded a massive punchout and was fired up coming back to the dugout.

In the eighth inning the Wabash bats came alive, as the Little Giants scored three runs to take a 6-5 lead.

Krugman started the eighth inning off on the right foot with a ground-rule double on the first pitch. After a sacrifice bunt by Andreas Lazar, Krugman advanced to third.

Salek was down 0-2 in the count, but the junior battled and hit a single to center field to tie the game at 6-6.

Glossa worked his way to as the game-winning run by singling through the left side, stealing second base, and beating out a close infield single at third base.

Salek stepped up to the plate with the bases loaded and hit a walk-off sacrifice fly to center field, as Glossa beat the throw home.
