John Carroll Athletics Fires Ahead in NCAC All-Sports Championship Standings

| By:

The Blue Streaks posted six top-four finishes this winter

CLEVELAND – This winter was one to remember for John Carroll Athletics.

Across the winter sports, the Blue Streaks claimed two North Coast Athletic Conference trophies and finished in the top three in five of six sports. The success in the standings gave the Blue Streaks a big boost in the NCAC's Dennis M. Collins All-Sports Trophy standings.

Entering the spring season, the Blue Streaks have a lead in the race for the 2025-26 North Coast Athletic Conference All-Sports Championship. The Blue Streaks accumulated 56 all-sport points during the winter season and now possess a narrow 115.5-114.0 lead over fall-sports leader DePauw in the race.

The points between the men's and women's are totaled up to award the Dennis M. Collins All-Sports Trophy. JCU has notched 56 points on the men's side (first among 9 schools) and 59.5 points on the women's side (third among 8 schools, 2 points behind the first-place tie between Denison and DePauw). It's important to note that one trophy is awarded, not one to the men's winner and one to the women's winner.

Full Standings and NCAC Release

The Blue Streaks starred at the NCAC Women's Indoor Track & Field Championships. JCU won the program's first track and field title, notching 11 All-Sports points with the first-place finish. Tori Miller (Triple Jump), Abby Schroff (Mile, 3000 Meter, and 5000 Meter), and Sandra King (400 Meter Dash), and Dakota Houston(Long Jump & 60 Meter Dash) all won championships individually for the Blue Streaks.

Both JCU Basketball teams tied for second place in the regular season. An important distinction here: Tournament results do not impact points in the all-sports standings. Each JCU hoops team tallied 9.5 points towards the standings before the tournament began.

While the tourney results didn't impact the standings, it's important to talk about the postseason success of both hoops teams. The JCU Men's Basketball squad, guided by NCAC Player of the Year Luke Chicone, roared for the NCAC Tournament Championship as the #3 seed. Meanwhile, the JCU Women's Basketball squad finished as the tournament runners-up, but claimed an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament. This marks the first time both teams will play in the NCAA Tournament since 2015.

The Men's Track & Field team snagged third at the indoor championships. Julius Kimbrough (High Jump) and Sam Su (Mile) turned in championship efforts for John Carroll. The third-place team effort netted nine All-Sports points.

The Men's Swimming team made a strong debut at the NCAC Championships, placing third and earning nine All-Sport points. The Blue Streaks excelled on the relay side and tallied a number of All-NCAC finishes. Most notably, Bart Kubis made history as John Carroll's first NCAC swimming champion, roaring for first-place in the 200 Breaststroke.

The Women's Swimming & Diving squad rounds things out with a fourth-place effort, claiming eight All-Sport points. JCU notched a number of strong finishes, including many good swims in the A finals.

Some history and information via the NCAC release:
"The All-Sports champion earns the Dennis M. Collins All-Sports Trophy, given annually to the school that performs the best across the NCAC's 23 sports. Eleven points are awarded for a first-place finish, ten for a second, nine for a third, and so on. Men's and women's performances are combined, exemplifying the North Coast's commitment to equity and balance among programs. Wooster won three of the first four All-Sports championships, interrupted only by Denison in year two. Ohio Wesleyan followed with a six-year run, leading to titles by Wooster (twice), Wittenberg (once), Denison (nine), OWU (twice), and then a tie between Denison and OWU in 2009. Wittenberg earned its second All-Sports title in 2010, followed by Denison in 2011 and DePauw in 2012. Denison then claimed back-to-back titles in 2013 and 2014, before DePauw regained the championship in 2015. The Big Red reclaimed the title after the 2015-16 academic year, followed by DePauw in 2017 before Denison once again earned back-to-back titles the next two years. An all-sports trophy was not awarded in 2020 or 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Big Red then secured four-straight titles from 2022-25 to collect the last six trophies."
