Softball Snags Two Wins as Pitching Continues to Shine

The Blue Streaks limited the two foes to just one run in 14 innings

COCOA BEACH, Fla. – Both the bats and the pitching took turns making an impact for John Carroll Softball on Thursday at the Space Coast Complex.

The Blue Streaks broke through for a season-high 7 runs in the first game of the day and notched the third shutout of the young season in the second game.

John Carroll advanced to 5-1 on the young season with a 7-1 victory over Baruch College and a 1-0 win over the University of Dubuque.

Game 1
It's not hyperbole to write that Kristin Dems is off to one of the best starts to a season by a pitcher in recent JCU history.

Dems' scoreless inning streak to start the season ended at 16, but the junior didn't allow one measly run to bother her. The Mentor native finished out her outing with ease, allowing five hits in five innings. If you total that up, Dems has just 1 run allowed in 19 innings of work in Florida.

The Blue Streaks gave her plenty of run support. An Izzy Coode RBI groundout in the first started the scoring. After the Bearcats evened it up in the top of the third, Coode again knocked in a run to get the lead back. In the fourth, the Blue Streaks pounced.

Gayle Mishic dashed home on a wild pitch and Elaina Rodriguez slotted a sacrifice fly for a pair of runs. Coode then provided the finishing punch, snapping a liner to center to score two Blue Streaks to a 6-1 lead. Gianna DiFranco netted her first collegiate RBI in the fifth to conclude the scoring.

In the meantime, Kaylinn Samuelraj made her sophomore season debut, working two scoreless innings to cap off the game.

Coode's 4 RBI game proved to be the difference. JCU also netted a whopping 5 stolen bases.

Game 2
Emily Graves pitched an absolute gem in game two. The junior allowed a few baserunners here and there, but only two Spartan baserunners reached scoring position through six innings. Dubuque got a runner to third in the third frame, but overall, Graves proved masterful.

The Blue Streaks notched a number of hits, eight to be exact, but the Dubuque starter stymied JCU in key moments with runners aboard. JCU left 9 runners stranded in the game. But in the sixth, the Blue Streaks broke through.

Alyssa McPeek singled to start off the frame, advancing to second on a sac bunt and to third on a Melissa Smith groundout. Bella Hunter then proved to be the hero with two outs, slotting a single up the middle for the game-winning run.

The Spartans at last got baserunners in the seventh, drawing two walks. Head Coach Tony Scibelli turned to the bullpen, going to Jordan Anderson. The next batter hit a little popfly to Hunter. The junior transfer from Case Western Reserve dove back to the bag to beat the runner. Initially ruled safe, the runner was called out on a game-ending double play following a discussion between the umpires.

And so, the Blue Streaks celebrated a third straight win. Impressively, in all five wins, JCU has limited the opponent to one run or none.

Elizabeth Hohlefelder enjoyed a great day at the plate, hitting 4-for-4. While she didn't score, the sophomore deserves kudos for the nice day at the dish.

John Carroll will conclude the Florida trip on Friday, facing Concordia University Chicago at 4:45 pm and Anna Maria College at 7 pm.
