Men's Tennis Earns Three Victories In Trip To Orlando

ORLANDO, Fla. – The balmy air in Florida treated John Carroll Men's Tennis nicely.

The Blue Streaks notched a 3-1 record over spring break in Florida, with results to be proud of, no doubt.

John Carroll started off on Monday by beating Adrian College, 4-3. On Tuesday, JCU notched a 7-0 sweep of Concordia University Chicago, 7-0. The Blue Streaks eked out a 4-3 win over Wartburg College on Wednesday before wrapping up the trip in a 7-0 defeat to the University of Mary Washington.

JCU: 4, Adrian: 3

The Blue Streaks got behind the 8-ball by losing the doubles point. Jean Davin and Anthony Markello scored a 6-3 doubles victory at the top spot in the lineup, but JCU lost both #2 and #3 doubles.

The top of the singles lineup excelled for John Carroll against the Bulldogs. JCU's rookie Jean Davin starred at the #1 spot with a 6-1, 6-2 conquest. Markello, the team's fiery veteran, roared for a 6-0, 6-3 conquest at the #2 spot. JCU's quieter senior, Phillip Gorun, did his job at #3 singles, 6-2, 6-0.

At #5 singles, Dylan Murlin helped to cinch the win. The sophomore snagged a 6-3, 6-4 conquest, his first of the spring, in a critical finish.

Nathan Tam and Cavan Boutillette both played very close matches that needed tiebreakers along the way. But the Bulldogs took both matches despite strong fights by the two JCU newbies at the #4 and #6 singles spots.

JCU: 7, Concordia-Chicago: 0

Doubles play proceeded smoothly with clear wins for JCU. Davin and Markello notched the easiest win atop the lineup with a 6-0 conquest. Murlin and Boutillette also dispatched their foes with ease at #3, 6-1.

John Carroll largely cruised, as Markello (#2), Gorun (#3), and Tam (#4) all rolled in double bagel wins. Murlin experienced a closer match at #5 but triumphed, 6-4, 6-0.

The true highlight came at #6 singles. Ryan Waugaman picked up his first collegiate victory at the final singles spot. The junior notched a 6-2, 6-3 win, much to the delight of his teammates.

JCU: 4, Wartburg: 3

John Carroll notched two of the three doubles matches to earn the team doubles point. Davin and Markello did good work atop the lineup with a 6-3 win, while Murlin and Boutillette won at #3 doubles by an identical score.

JCU did well at the top of the lineup. Davin snagged a 6-2, 6-0 victory at #1 singles, while Markello fired up a 6-1, 6-3 conquest at #2.

Murlin provided the victory for the Blue Streaks, as his match took a tiebreaker. The sophomore dropped the first set, 4-6, before forcing a tiebreaker with a 7-5 victory. In bonus tennis, the Hilliard native won by the minimum in a dramatic finish, 10-8.

JCU: 0, Mary Washington: 7

John Carroll experienced difficulty with a challenging Eagles team.

The duo of Davin and Markello fought, but weren't able to come away with the advantage, losing in the first set 3-4.

Philip Gorun and Nathan Tam weren't able to come away with a point, losing in the first set by a score of 0-6.

In the third doubles, Murlin and Boutillette lost by a final of 2-6.

Mary Washington continued to bring the momentum going into singles as the Blue Streaks were not able to find an answer.

John Carroll will return to action on Wednesday, March 14th against DePauw University in their second conference matchup of the season at home. The match time is TBA.
