Women's Lacrosse Falters at Wooster in NCAC Play

The Blue Streaks' offense fizzled against a strong Fighting Scots team

WOOSTER – A lengthy 7-game winning streak came to a close for John Carroll Women's Lacrosse on Saturday.

Against a stout College of Wooster squad, the Blue Streaks fought well, but could not keep pace with the Fighting Scots.

Wooster dealt John Carroll its first North Coast Athletic Conference defeat, 13-7.

John Carroll got on the board in the first 50 seconds, as Kathleen Cagney opened the scoring off an Anna Spitzer pass. But Wooster responded with spite, firing off five straight goals. Anna Vaccarelli ended the run at the 2:47 mark with a Riley Knapp assist. But the visitors still trailed after the first quarter, 5-2.

The second quarter was quite quiet, with each team only managing one goal. Vaccarelli tabbed the goal for JCU. Throughout the quarter, Wooster controlled much of the possession and got the better of the opportunities. But the visitors headed into the break very much in the game, trailing 6-3.

The third quarter proved to be a defensive slugest until the final four minutes. At the 4:14 mark, Vaccarelli at last broke the ice with a goal to slim the deficit to two. But the Fighting Scots came alive down the stretch, netting three goals to head into the final period ahead, 9-4.

The Fighting Scots extended the run to six goals before the JCU offense figured out the hosts. Vaccarelli broke the spell with a goal at the midway point of the fourth. Kenzie Krom netted a goal on the woman-up and Mea Musillo also scored, but the deficit proved to be too much.

Vaccarelli did almost all the damage for JCU with 4 goals and 1 assist. Hannah Weiss and Emily Van Gorder led the defense with 4 groundballs and a caused turnover apiece.

In net, Josephine Lawler continued to shine. The senior contributed a career-best 16 saves on the day.
