Softball Swept on Senior Day, Losing Narrowly to Wittenberg in Two Close Games

The Blue Streaks hung with the first-place Tigers in the NCAC doubleheader

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS – The weather and vibes were outstanding on Senior Day for John Carroll Softball.

The results did not match the sunny weather, but the Blue Streaks should be plenty proud of going toe-to-toe with Wittenberg University in Sunday's North Coast Athletic Conference doubleheader at Bracken Field.

The Blue Streaks dropped both games by scores of 4-2, but John Carroll played impressive softball against the Tigers, currently perched atop the NCAC standings (tied with DePauw).

All seven seniors contributed in a strong day of softball for the Blue Streaks: #3 Elaina Rodriguez, #5 Jordan Anderson, #6 Abby Farber, #8 Melissa Smith, #9 Emily Graves, #14 Bella Carcioppolo, and #25 Casey Cash.

Game 1
The Blue Streaks started strong on Senior Day. In the top of the first, JCU notched a rare popout doubleplay. In the bottom of the frame, Elizabeth Hohlefelder shot a double to leftfield. After an Izzy Coode sacrifice bunt, Jordan Anderson brought her home with an RBI groundout.

The Tigers timed up Emily Graves in the second, tabbing five hits that led to four runs and a quick 4-1 lead. The Blue Streaks loaded the bases in the bottom half, aided by two walks. Wittenberg wasted little time going to bullpen star Lilly Shaw and then Lilly James, two of the top relievers in the conference. The duo. Anderson then checked in for JCU in the circle.

In the third, the Blue Streaks loaded the bases again, as Anderson and Melissa Smith singled before Elaina Rodriguez walked. But Wittenberg escaped again, as JCU grounded into a 2-3 doubleplay. In the fifth, JCU took advantage of a Hohlefelder double, as an Anderson RBI double slimmed the margin to two runs.

Anderson contributed five excellent innings of relief. But despite the offensive opportunities, the Blue Streaks could not scratch across the necessary runs to author a comeback.

Game 2
The hosts quickly got on the board in the first frame. It was the usual suspects, as Hohlefelder got aboard and Anderson fired her home with an RBI single. The Tigers responded in the third, notching three runs and leading Tony Scibelli to turn to the bullpen. The decision proved to be wise, as Casey Cash got out of the jam.

Once again, Anderson played the hero in the third, doubling home Izzy Coode after the sophomore got aboard with a walk. JCU loaded the bases with one out, but Wittenberg got out of it still ahead on the scoreboard, 3-2.

Wittenberg added an insurance run in the fifth and threatened for more, but Kaylinn Samuelraj limited the Tigers to just one tally on the scoreboard. The sophomore stood strong in 2.2 scoreless innings of relief.

The Tigers' elite bullpen proved to be too much to overcome for the JCU bats, as Wittenberg held on for the sweep.

The Blue Streaks head to Heidelberg on Tuesday for a non-conference doubleheader in Tiffin.
