Men's Lacrosse Stalls Out Against Ohio Wesleyan on Senior Day

The Blue Streaks kept it close through the third quarter, but lost control in the fourth quarter

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS – On Senior Day, John Carroll Men's Lacrosse fought hard and hung with North Coast Athletic Conference powerhouse Ohio Wesleyan University for much of the game.

But the Battling Bishops ran away with it in the fourth quarter.

With a 20-11 victory, OWU knocked JCU out of NCAC Tournament contention.

The teams traded goals in the opening portion of the first half.  Braden Zarek got JCU on the board with a nice solo shot just a few minutes into the game. At the midpoint of the quarter, Brandon Trottier ran forward and scored a nice ripper from in front of the OWU sidelines for his first collegiate goal. Following a pair of OWU goals, JCU fired back.

Seamus Nicholson tallied a goal in transition while absorbing a hit. A couple minutes later, Casey LaForce fired one home off a nice Larry Voss pass. The teams stood tied after the opening 15 minutes, 4-4.

The second quarter belonged to OWU. The visitors got on the board first with a man-up goal. Trottier tallied another nice goal to even it back up. But from there, the Battling Bishops rattled off six unanswered goals. OWU's domination on faceoffs and groundballs paved the way for the visitors, as the Battling Bishops possessed a secure 11-5 advantage at half.

Inspired coming out of half, the Blue Streaks scored four straight, beginning with a Cameron Miller man-up goal. Trottier then hit a low ripper for a hat trick.

Less than a minute later, Sean Hogan scored on a nice bouncer. Shortly after, Richard Moran scored inside while taking a hit following a pass from Zarek. OWU called a timeout and changed the goalie to regroup after JCU slimmed the margin to 11-9.

After the break, OWU scored next. But JCU replied with two tallies at the 7-mark, first with a Zarek goal and then Voss netted a beautiful tally to slim the margin to 12-11. But from there, the Blue Streaks ran out of gas. Ohio Wesleyan scored the final two goals of the third, including a key goal with just 10 seconds left, to head into the final period up 14-11.

OWU tallied a goal off the opening faceoff and were off to the races from there. John Carroll struggled to get possession and couldn't stop a hard-charging Battling Bishops offense in the opening portion of the quarter. OWU built a 19-11 advantage by the midpoint of the fourth. JCU could not muster a response.

Zarek led the offense with 5 points. Camden Uchic did solid work on defense with 2 caused turnovers and 4 groundballs. As a team, OWU won 28-of-34 faceoffs and won the groundball battle, 48-24.
