In a Pair of Extra-Innings Thrillers, Softball Stunned Twice at Wooster

The Fighting Scots walked off the Blue Streaks twice in NCAC play

WOOSTER – Softball can be a cruel game at times.

Heading to The College of Wooster on Tuesday afternoon, John Carroll Softball had the opportunity to even out at .500 in North Coast Athletic Conference play and improve positioning for the tournament.

Instead, the Blue Streaks return home with two heartbreaking defeats in extra innings. Wooster walked off JCU in the eighth inning of the first game, 4-3, and then again in the second game, 6-5, in the ninth.

John Carroll drops to 3-7 in NCAC play, 12-15 overall.

Game 1
Ashley Sykes got the visitors on the board first, plating the game's first run on an RBI single to center in the second inning. Wooster quickly mounted a response in the bottom half, scoring three.

Jordan Anderson entered and settled down the situation in the circle.

In the fifth, Elizabeth Hohlefelder hit a grounder down the left field line, and the speedster reached second. An Izzy Coode dribbler up the middle scored the junior. Then Anderson helped her own cause, getting a good piece on a 2-2 count, and the ball carried over the fence in left for a 4-3 lead.

Unfortunately the Fighting Scots found some magic late, first with a solo homer in the seventh. After a 1-2-3 JCU top of the eighth, an inning-opening Wooster double portended a dark ending. After a sacrifice bunt sent the runner to third, the Fighting Scots hit a liner over the head of JCU's third baseman to score the game-winning run.

Game 2
Emily Graves got the start in the second game and pitched quite well in the first four frames, keeping the hosts off the board.

John Carroll struck first in the top of the fourth, as back-to-back doubles by Coode and Anderson scored the game's first tally.

A JCU error to start the fifth allowed the Fighting Scots to score three runs. But like the first game, JCU responded well. Hohlefelder walked to begin the sixth, and Coode doubled to score her. An Anderson single plated Coode to tie it up. And an Elaina Rodriguez single that hugged the left field line scored Anderson for the 4-3 lead.

Another Anderson RBI single in the seventh added an insurance run, but it still wasn't enough. A 2-run homer by the Fighting Scots evened it up at 5-5 and forced extras.

JCU got runners aboard in the eighth and ninth, but again, the Fighting Scots made the most of their chance in the ninth. Wooster got a runner aboard on an error to start the inning. JCU garnered two outs, but on an 0-2 count, Wooster's second baseman clipped a single just past the shortstop to plate the game-winning run.

Anderson knocked in five of JCU's 9 runs throughout the two games, hitting 4-for-7. Coode also notched a pair of 2-hit games.

Next Up
The Blue Streaks will host the current leaders in the NCAC standings, DePauw University, on Saturday for a conference doubleheader. The two games will be the final home games of the season at Bracken Field.
