Baseball Roars for Game 1 Win, but Game 2 Comeback Falls Short at Oberlin

The Blue Streaks loaded the bases in the ninth in Game 2, but couldn't find the magic

OBERLIN – On a gorgeous Wednesday afternoon, John Carroll Baseball only got half of what it was looking for.

Peering at the North Coast Athletic Conference standings, a sweep of Oberlin College would have been clutch for the Blue Streaks with league play winding down. But it was not meant to be.Ā The Blue Streaks routed the Yeomen in the first game, 13-4, but a late comeback attempt went for naught in a 7-6 defeat in the second game.Ā

At 6-4 in NCAC play, JCU still owns a 2-game lead for the fourth and final spot in the NCAC Tournament with 6 league games left. But the margin for error is now smaller.Ā

Game 1
The visitors got on the board early with a Nico Ruoti RBI single in the first. The teams then traded runs before the Blue Streaks burst out in the fifth inning for 5 runs.Ā

Konner Hauck began the fun with a solo shot. Thomas Bates and Jake Monaco then contributed 2-run doubles, upping JCU's lead to 7-3. But that wasn't all. The Blue Streaks executed a double steal to score a run in the sixth. Meanwhile, Michael Perry looked great on the mound.

And then, the dam broke with a 6-run seventh inning.Ā Ā

JCU drew a whopping five walks, with three runs scoring thanks to free passes. Brett Krugman drove the stake through Oberlin's hearts with a 2-run double to up the lead to 14-3, the eventual final score, as the game ended after seven innings.Ā

Perry got the win, providing 3 sterling innings of relief. Each member of JCU's starting nine tallied a hit. Bates led the way with 2 hits and 3 RBIs. JCU's patience showed with 10 walks.

Game 2
John Carroll got the benefit of Oberlin mistakes in the early going. A pair of errors and a wild pitch allowed the Blue Streaks to cross four runs in the third inning.

Minus a lone run in the fourth, Jake Corll cruised until the sixth. A Hauck sacrifice fly in the top of the sixth made it a 5-run game. But in the bottom half of the inning, disaster struck.

JCU loaded the bases with two outs and walked home an Oberlin runner. The bullpen was called upon, but could not deliver. The Yeomen hit a game-changing grand slam, stealing a 6-5 lead. The Blue Streaks never quite recovered.

Oberlin added a key insurance run in the seventh to make it 7-5. JCU punched back in the eighth, as a Hauck double to the wall in left slimmed the margin to one. But JCU left two runners in scoring position.Ā

In the ninth, JCU loaded the bases with just one out. But again, Oberlin pulled a rabbit out of a hat, escaping unscathed and with an upset win over JCU.

Ethan Glossa and Bates both notched 2-hit games. Xander Gendics and Frank Freeman combined for 2 innings of scoreless relief late to leave the door open for the comeback.Ā

Next Up
The Blue Streaks have a lengthy roadtrip in store this weekend, heading to DePauw University for an NCAC doubleheader.
