Wooster Outduels Men's Lacrosse Late in Home Finale

The Blue Streaks allowed 4 goals in the final 4:30 in the heartbreaker

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS – On paper, there was nothing to play for on Wednesday night for John Carroll Men's Lacrosse, having been eliminated already from the North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament.

But pride and a final chance to play at Don Shula Stadium, especially on a beautiful spring event, was more than enough. The Blue Streaks nearly played spoiler against a strong Wooster team.

But the Fighting Scots roared back from a 3-goal deficit with 4 goals in the final 4:30 in a heartbreaker home finale for JCU.

With the 11-10 loss, JCU drops to 2-5 in league play, while Wooster stays alive in the tournament race with a 5-2 mark.

John Carroll got on the board just three minutes into the game, as Larry Voss fired home a shot in the alley Braden Zarek passed in a nice helper from X. At the 9:48 mark, Zarek made another nice pass leading to a goal. This time, Casey LaForce made a nice spin move while drawing a crosscheck. Wooster killed the penalty, but not long after, Tyler Pirain caused a turnover at the sidelines and slotted a pass to Voss. The junior ripped a nice goal that surprised the goalie.

Wooster got on the board at 2:35, slimming the deficit to 3-1 heading into the second quarter.

Just 57 seconds into the second, the Blue Streaks found twine. Larry Voss picked up a groundball inside and fired home a nice goal. But from there, the Blue Streaks' offense fell silent.

Despite a strong effort by JCU's defense, which notched 8 caused turnovers in the first half, the Fighting Scots evened things up at 4-4 at the 6:43 mark.

With 4 seconds left in the half, Sean Hogan gave the Blue Streaks a bigtime boost. The sophomore scored a bouncer shot to send the hosts into halftime with a 5-4 lead.

Wooster netted the next two goals before JCU provided a fantastic response with two quick-hitter goals. At the 3-minute mark, Camden Uchic executed a clear by himself, found an opening, and took advantage. The senior scored his first goal of the season and third of his career on a fantastic shot. On the ensuing faceoff, Carmine Periandri won it and raced down the field, scored a great goal. The tally marked his first goal of his collegiate career.

Wooster tabbed a man-up goal with 39 seconds on the clock, tying the game at 7-all heading into the fourth.

After a defensive start to the quarter, JCU roared for three goals in 33 seconds at the 6-minute mark. To begin, LaForce tossed a perfect pass across the field to Lombardo, who fired it home. Off the following faceoff, Nicholas Yemma rifled a quick shot home. And to finish off the trio of rapid goals, Voss hit a beautiful ripper for a 10-7 lead.

Wooster found a response at 4:26 and then used a man-up chance to slim the deficit to just one with 2:51 to play. Then on a nice play, the Fighting Scots evened the game with 1:50 on the clock, making it a whole new ballgame.

With 1:06 left, Wooster found the game-winner on a nice crossfield pass and score. JCU did manage to get the ball for one last possession, but a last-second shot went wide.

JCU did win the groundball battle, 32-25. For just the third time this season, JCU won the faceoff war, going an impressive 19-of-25. Periandri did an excellent job on faceoffs while notching 10 groundballs.

Larry Voss led the scoring with a career-best 4 goals while adding 3 caused turnovers. Tyler Pirain also chipped in 3 CTs.
