More Schweickert Magic: Baseball Sweeps Wooster to Punch Ticket to NCAC Tourney

The Blue Streaks will compete in the NCAC Tournament next week after beating Wooster twice

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS – In the first year as members of the North Coast Athletic Conference, John Carroll Baseball is headed to the conference tournament.

A sweep of The College of Wooster at Schweickert Field, plus other necessary results across the conference, clinched the postseason berth for the Blue Streaks.

The Blue Streaks downed the Fighting Scots by scores of 9-6 and 7-5. The victories propel JCU to 8-6 in league play with two conference games left to play.

The home-turf advantage of Schweickert Field has proved to be a boon for JCU. The Blue Streaks advanced to 11-2 at home, marking the first time since 2009 that the team has reached 11 wins in a season at home. JCU is now 19-7 (.730) since Schweickert Field's grass and dirt became turf.

Game 1
With Jake Corll on the mound to start the game, the Scots scored a run early in the first inning. A walk for Ethan Glossa took him to first base, and he advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt and a groundout. Brett Krugman singled to bring Glossa in to even up the score.

The second inning saw a run each for both teams, with Dylan Sowers hitting a double to bring Jordan Suvak home. A homerun in the third over right field for Krugman stole a 4-2 lead for the Blue Streaks.

Wooster loaded the bases to start the fourth and brought one home with a fly to right field, but Corll finished out the inning with the lead intact. John Carroll followed suit, loading the bases. Thomas Bates hit an RBI groundout, bringing Suvak home.

Corll kept the bases empty in the fifth inning, the only score for the Scots coming from a homer. A pitch change came halfway through the sixth for the Blue Streaks, with Michael Perry taking over at the mound. A sacrifice fly to right field evened the score as the Streaks took over.

A triple to right center from Suvak started the bottom of the sixth. With Sowers on first, Glossa's double brought them both home. Following a bunt by Bates and a double from Haracz, Glossa scored. Chris Bach sent a double flying to left field, bringing Haracz home and advancing the score to 9-5.

A scoreless seventh opened the door to Wooster in the eighth inning, loading the bases and bringing one home. Austin Miller checked in to pitch, escaping the tough jam with a final strikeout.

With two Scots on base in the ninth, three fly outs to center field ended their chance to overtake and the Blue Streaks took the first game, 9-6.

Krugman tallied a game-high 3 RBIs, while four different JCU hitters tabbed two hits.

Game 2
The visitors got on the board in the top of the second, but it wasn't as bad as it could have been.

Wooster loaded the bases with no outs to get to the bullpen. Drew Walker allowed a hit by pitch, but then got a doubleplay and a strikeout looking, limiting Wooster to two runs. In the bottom of the frame, JCU loaded the bases with 2 outs, but left them loaded. Frank Freeman checked into the game in the third, and the Fighting Scots tallied a run on the board. Then, the JCU bats came alive.

Krugman started the scoring with an RBI groundout, marking his 31st run batted in of the season. Bach linked a single to left to plate JCU's second run. Konner Hauck then hit a monster triple to left center, plating Bach and tying the ballgame.

Jordan Suvak started the fourth with a bunt single that the pitcher couldn't handle. A pair of wild pitches got the senior to third. Ethan Glossa got him home with an RBI sacrifice fly for the go-ahead run.

Wooster knotted the game at 4-4 with a deep solo shot over the wall in right field in the sixth. The Fighting Scots got runners to the corners with one out, leading Bobby Bell to turn to Noah Trojanowski. After the first pitch, Chris Bach picked off the runner at third, showing off his cannon of an arm. Troj then got a flyout to escape the inning with the game still tied.

In the bottom of the sixth, JCU stole back the lead. Jake Monaco notched a single and Sowers got aboard on a hit by pitch. Glossa scored both with a beautiful, deep double off the wall in right center. The senior then came around to score on a Bates double down the right field line. George Haracz kept the hit parade going with a single through the left side. But Wooster escaped there, keeping the score at 7-4.

The Fighting Scots threatened to make it closer in the bottom of the seventh, getting runners to the corners with two outs. Kiayuan Baskerville escaped without a scratch, though he allowed a solo homer in the eighth, narrowing the deficit to 7-5. Baskerville got two outs and Michael Perry notched the final out in the frame, getting to the ninth with the lead intact.

In the ninth, Wooster threatened with runners at the corners. But Austin Miller slammed the door shut, notching his second save in as many games.

Trojanowski nabbed the win, the second of his career. Bell used 7 pitchers, who limited Wooster to 8 hits.

Glossa led the offense with 3 RBIs, while Monaco led all hitters with three baseknocks.
