Baseball Falls to Heidelberg on Chilly Day at Schweickert Field

The Student Princes scored 4 runs in the ninth inning to win it

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS – Originally slated to play at the ballpark that Cleveland kids dream of stepping foot on, Progressive Field, a rainy deluge on Wednesday evening nixed those plans.

So, John Carroll Baseball and Heidelberg met on Thursday afternoon on Schweickert Field's turf instead.

The Blue Streaks started out strong but ran out of gas in the ninth, as the Student Princes spoiled the day, 8-7, thanks to a 4-run ninth inning.

The hosts launched into a hit parade in the first, beginning with an Ethan Glossa double down the line in right. A George Haracz single scored Glossa for the first run of the ballgame. After a Brett Krugman single, Chris Bach plated the second run on an RBI single through the left side.

Jay Rinehart cruised through the first two innings before running into trouble in the third, as Berg got runners into scoring position with one out. Noah Trojanowski, the sports information employee of the month for April, escaped the jam unscathed.

Heidelberg walked the bases loaded in the fifth, and then walked Brett Krugman for JCU's third run of the game. Konner Hauck then knocked in two runs, slapping a single to right center. Berg then called to the bullpen and got out of trouble with JCU ahead, 5-0.

Meanwhile, Jake Gunvalsen checked into the game for the fourth and pitched two perfect innings of relief. Heidelberg at last broke up the no-hitter in the sixth and got a pair of runners aboard, leading JCU to turn to the bullpen again. But Berg plated three anyways, narrowing the gap. Thankfully, a Haracz RBI single stretched the lead back to 6-3.

The Student Princes got a run back in the seventh on a sacrifice fly. Austin Miller checked in and quieted the Berg bats for a couple innings. But the senior tired in the ninth, as Heidelberg plated three unearned runs in the frame to take the lead, 7-6. Keaton Phillips allowed an RBI single before stopping the bleeding.

With one out in the bottom of the frame, Keaton Phillips fired up a deep double to left. Nico Ruoti pinch ran and soon scored, but the rally ended there.
