Baseball Swept at #1 Denison to Wrap Up NCAC Play

The Blue Streaks and Big Red will meet again in the NCAC Tournament on Thursday

GRANVILLE, Ohio – A tall test was faced by John Carroll Baseball on Saturday.

The Blue Streaks wrapped up North Coast Athletic Conference action by playing the #1 team in NCAA Division III, Denison University.

JCU kept it close in the first game, losing 6-4, but the second game was a blowout loss, 13-1. JCU ends conference play with an 8-8 mark.

A chance at redemption awaits, though, as the Blue Streaks will play the Big Red again to open the NCAC Tournament in Chillicothe, Ohio on Thursday.

Game 1
The visitors opened the game on a strong note. With one out in the first, George Haracz slapped a hard hit up the middle. The shortstop (shaded to deadcenter) couldn't make the throw, and it was ruled an error. Brett Krugman sent a double to left before a Denison failed pickoff attempt by the pitcher allowed the game's first run to score. In the second, Konner Hauck shot a double to left center. A Dylan Sowers single in front of the right fielder to score Hauck.

Denison got the runs back and then some in the bottom of the second. A bases-loaded hit by pitch and then walk tied the game before a 2-run Denison snagged the lead. Drew Walker entered the game from the bullpen and stopped the bleeding.

With two outs in the third, Chris Bach bunted beautifully down the third base line, but was stranded. In the fourth, JCU successfully mounted a 2-out rally. Back-to-back-to-back singles by Michael Pollard, Sowers, and Ethan Glossa plated one run. A grounder that went under the Denison second baseman's glove scored the game-tying run. Denison quickly grabbed the lead back in the bottom of the frame thanks to a balk.

John Carroll threatened in the eighth, drawing a trio of walks, but left two runners stranded.

Luis Arreola looked outstanding in relief for JCU to keep the ballgame within reach. The sophomore enjoyed the lengthiest stint of the season on the mound, and certainly the best, considering the opposing hitters. The sophomore allowed just 2 runs, 1 earned, striking out four. Roger Simon closed it out with a clean ninth, but JCU's bats couldn't string together a comeback.

Game 2
Denison jumped all over the JCU pitching staff at the start of the first game.

The Big Red plated three runs in the first inning and eight in the second to run away with it.

A Dylan Sowers RBI single stood as the lone bright spot, as the Blue Streaks lost in seven innings.

Next Up
