Hot Bats Propel Baseball to Important NCAC Win at OWU

JCU registered a season-best 17 hits

DELAWARE – A day after a dearth of hits, John Carroll Baseball scored in bunches in an important bounceback game.

The Blue Streaks recovered from a North Coast Athletic Conference loss on Thursday to Ohio Wesleyan University, beating the Battling Bishops a day later to complete the two-game series. The game, originally scheduled for Saturday, was moved at the last minute to Friday afternoon to avoid impending rain this weekend.

Thanks to a season-high 17 hits and a solid start by Frank Freeman, the Blue Streaks advance to 3-1 on the year and 14-7 on the year.

The consistency of the offense was perhaps the most impressive improvement from the first game. The Blue Streaks managed a run in every inning except for the ninth.

A Brett Krugman RBI single in the first started the scoring. A Geoge Haracz sacrifice bunt followed for a second run. JCU doubled the lead in the second. Jalen Jackson started things with a double to left center. Following a Jordan Suvak single, a failed pickoff attempt allowed Jackson to score. Ethan Glossa then provided a sacrifice fly to plate Suvak. Jackson authored more offense in the third with an RBI single.

OWU got on the board in the third, but Freeman limited the damage to one run. Glossa quickly got it back with a solo shot to left in the next half-inning.

John Carroll put the game out of reach in the fifth, as RBI doubles by Chris Bach and Glossa helped to propel the advantage to 10-1. JCU plated a run apiece in the sixth and seventh, with rain interrupting the flow. Mother Nature toyed with the teams, as the weather changed from drizzle to downpour to rainbows in the span of 10 minutes.

OWU chased Freeman in the bottom of the seventh soon after the game resumed, but it didn't matter. For good measure, Glossa lofted a double down the left field line for his 4th RBI on the day and his team-best 21st on the season.

Glossa finished with his first 5-hit game of his JCU career, tying the program single-game record. Besides the senior's career day, Haracz notched his third 3-hit game of the season.

Freeman nabbed the win, with Austin Miller pitching well in 2.2 innings of work, striking out 4 Bishops.
