Marcinko brings three decades of coaching experience

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS – With an ascending group of young golfers, John Carroll Women's Golf has a new, veteran leader.

Mike Marcinko has been named as the Head Coach for JCU Women's Golf following the departure of Missy Gedeon.

A coaching veteran entering his 34th season, Marcinko joined JCU with 20 seasons of college head and assistant coaching experience. Marcinko just completed his fourth year as a volunteer assistant coach for JCU Women's Basketball. In terms of golf, Marcinko has spent time coaching in the high school ranks.

"I am very pleased to announce the appointment of Mike Marcinko as Head Women's Golf coach," said Vice President of Athletics Brian Polian '97. "We know Mike well as he has served as assistant on our Women's Basketball staff for a couple of years now. He has high level knowledge and experience in the golf world, but more importantly, he has a proven track record as a college coach across multiple sports.  He is a dedicated professional who has helped develop young men and women across multiple disciplines.  We are looking forward to seeing our team develop under his leadership."

Besides his basketball experience, Marcinko served for three seasons as the head boy's golf coach at Independence High School. Marcinko coached the Blue Devils from 2019-21. Independence made the District Tournament twice and reached the State Tournament once.

Marcinko was named the 2020 Chagrin Valley Conference's Metro Division Coach of the Year after leading the Blue Devils to the division title.

"I have enjoyed my four years at JCU, so the opportunity to do more and be on campus is very intriguing," said Marcinko. "John Carroll is a great university, with nice facilities, and good foundation to be competitive. The NCAC is tough in golf, but we have something to shoot for. We want to be competitive and then start winning."

Milt Johnson will remain on the staff as an assistant coach. During the 2025-26 season, Johnson helped to guide a team composed almost completely of first years to strong results, including two tournament victories in the fall.

"I've known Milt for over a decade, so pairing up with him is awesome," said Marcinko. "Milt was my son AJ's first swing coach. He sees things the same way I do. In talking with the players on the team, we discussed being competitive every day. We will work hard on the mental side of the game, especially with match and course preparation.

"I also want to thank Brian Polian and the hiring committee for this amazing opportunity. I'm excited to get started."
