On Wenzler's Warriors Night, Men's Soccer Emerges with Win over Westminster

Noah Schmidt's goal secured the victory to open the campaign

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS – You don't expect the season opening game to be pretty, and at times, it wasn't. But you hope to get a victory.

On a night dedicated to the legacy of the late Chris Wenzler '90 on Wenzler's Warriors night, John Carroll Men's Soccer did just that.

The Blue Streaks held on for a 1-0 conquest of a young Westminster College side at Don Shula Stadium on a gorgeous Tuesday night.

Noah Schmidt's excellent goal stood as the difference in the first contest of the season. In the sixth minute, Louis Roseberry sent in a free kick into the box where Schmidt fought for it.

The junior from Lewis Center, Ohio achieved a rare feat with a double header, using his noggin to put in the first goal of the season for the Blue Streaks.

While the heat began to dissipate as the sun set on the first night of September, the Blue Streaks' attack did not lose steam. John Carroll outshot the Titans in the first half, 10-1, forcing the Westminster keeper to make four saves.

The second half proved to be much of the save.

Westminster's keeper notched four saves again, several of them doozies. But somehow, someway the Titans' netminder managed to keep the margin at one goal.

In the final minute, Westminster nearly stole a draw. A Titan found space and fired an absolute missile upper 90, only turned away by the crossbar. In the end, JCU finished with an 18-3 margin in shots, 9-0 in shots on goal.

"I thought we played well and did what we had to do to get the result but we have to clean up our decisions and touches in the final third," said Head Coach Dejan Mladenovic '06, '25G. "At the end of the day, we will take the win with this young group and use this as a building block going into the weekend."

Next Up
John Carroll will spend the weekend in our nation's Capital, beginning with a Friday night game at Catholic University.
