Volleyball Wins Two of Three in the Windy City

Michele Benoit won her 700th career game, one of just 10 active D-III coaches to reach the milestone

CHICAGO – This weekend, John Carroll Volleyball visited a JCU alumni stronghold, traveling to Chicago.

The Blue Streaks took part in the Windy City Invite hosted by North Park University, and return home with two wins, including a milestone win for their coach.

John Carroll beat Eastern University on Friday in four sets (25-23, 25-17, 20-25, 25-10), then defeated Webster University in four sets (25-19, 14-25, 25-14, 25-12) and then ended the weekend with a five-set loss to  Wentworth Institute of Technology (25-13, 23-25, 25-12, 18-25, 7-15).

The second win of the weekend clinched the 700th victory in Michele Benoit's coaching career. The veteran coach stands 10th among active NCAA Division III volleyball coaches.

JCU vs. Eastern
The first set of the weekend couldn't be much closer, as the team remained within a point or two for just about the whole way. With the score knotted at 21-all, Hailey Williams stepped up with a pair of kills to help JCU reach set point. Eastern managed two kills but Tess Murray managed to end it at 25-23.

A 6-1 run by JCU at the midway mark of the second set paved the path to victory in srt two, as Mary Kate Sheehan and Natalie Glow both shined. Khloe Trivoli closed it out with a pair of kills.

The third set matched the first, closely contested. Except this time, Eastern staved off elimination, ending the set with a 4-point run to force another set. JCU dominated the next set, anyways, as the Blue Streaks roared for a 7-point run early with Hailey Williams at the service line. Eastern never recovered, as the Blue Streaks looked darn near perfect with 16 kills and 0 errors, an impeccable .615 attack percentage.

For the match, Glowe and Sheehan both finished with double-digit kills with 13 and 11. Caylynn Hovan tabbed 4 aces plus 14 assists, while Tess Murray notched 25 assists. Olivia Mogyordy snagged 26 digs.

JCU vs. Webster
John Carroll avoided many mistakes in the first match on Saturday, as evidenced by a .438 attack percentage in the opening set. Williams and Glowe did much of the damage. A 5-1 run closed things out for JCU, capped off by kills by Grace Jones and Kallan Hrics.

Webster controlled much of the action in the second set, enjoying the lead nearly the whole way. Four straight service aces for Webster took the wind out of JCU's sails early. John Carroll flipped the script in the third, aided by attack errors. Brooke Conlan tabbed a couple kills late to seal the deal.

The Blue Streaks finished the job in the fourth set with ease. Similar to the first set, the JCU attack played just about flawlessly with 17 kills against just 2 errors. The Blue Streaks won handily, 25-12, to claim the win.

Glowe led the offense with 13 kills. Murray starred with a season-high 36 assists. Mogyordy roamed the back line with 20 digs.

JCU vs. Wentworth 
John Carroll soared to another great start, helped by Wentworth errors but moreso defined by an efficient offense. After a dominant JCU start, Wentworth eked out a closely contested second set. 

The Blue Streaks responded with a lopsided second-set victory. Mary Kate Sheehan, no doubt happy to be playing near home, looked great in the second. Service aces helped JCU's cause along with Wentworth mistakes. 

Looking to put it away, the Blue Streaks couldn't stop the Wentworth front line and allowed a pair of service aces late, as the Leopards managed to survive for a fifth set. 

The Leopards, who played in the NCAA Division III Tournament a year ago, took advantage of the new life, largely owning the fifth set and clinching a narrow victory with a 15-7 set-five triumph.

JCU's attack did look good with a .252 attack percentage, guided by Glowe with 16 kills and Sheehan with 13. Murray set them up with 31 assists. Mogyordy managed 18 digs.

The Blue Streaks will return home this weekend, hosting Chatham University for Grade School Night on Tuesday.
