Women's Soccer Drops to #15 Penn State Behrend on Senior Day

The Blue Streaks could not overcome an early Lions goal

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS – The home opener offered a difficult test for John Carroll Women's Soccer.

The Blue Streaks matched up with #15 Penn State Behrend following Senior Day at Don Shula Stadium.

From start to finish, the Lions enjoyed the better of the play, coming away with a 2-0 victory.

Before the match, the Blue Streaks celebrated the four seniors who have made a bigtime impact on the program: Lucy Altieri, Bella Carcelli, Julia Niehaus, and Abby Walker. The quartet has formed the foundation of the program, making much of the success over the last few seasons possible.

In the 11th minute, the Lions fired ahead after threatening from the jump. Bri Ross worked up the left side and muscled past a pair of JCU defenders. The star centered the ball into the crease and a sprinting Rachel Sickeri met the ball perfectly, tapping it into the back of the net for the opening salvo.

The visitors continued to dominate possession, as most of the first half was played in the John Carroll end. Brooke Berkowitz tabbed one of the best chances of the first 45 in the 36th minute, but it was saved.

Some early yellow cards marked the start of the second half, as did a Berkowitz shot on goal. But the Lions added an insurance tally. In the 66th minute, a Penn State Behrend corner kick was perfectly placed in the middle of the crease, and Emily Samluk calmly headed into the back of the left side of the net.

John Carroll did a better job of possessing the ball in the second half, but lacked the precise coordination needed to penetrate the tough Penn State Behrend defenses.

The Lions owned a 20-4 advantage in shots, 10-2 in shots on goal. JCU drops to 2-3-2 on the campaign.
