Women's Soccer Stumbles at Home to Heidelberg

The Student Princes scored on both shots on goal, while the Blue Streaks couldn't capitalize on chances

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS – Two home games, two losses for the young John Carroll Women's Soccer squad.

The Blue Streaks dropped a 2-0 decision to Heidelberg University on a nice fall evening at Don Shula Stadium.

With the loss, the Blue Streaks drop to 2-4-2 on the year. Heidelberg took advantage of limited opportunities, while the hosts couldn't punch in any chances.

The start of the game provided plenty of fireworks. The match opened with action up and down the field rapidly, including a Brooke Berkowitz chance up the left flank in the sixth minute.

But Berg struck first in the 14th minute. Harper Danze tapped ahead a nice pass to Ella Jacobs, and the junior centered a perfect pass to Alayna Hahn, who finished it off. It was a beautiful setup for the Student Princes.

John Carroll responded with plentiful chances, as Gracie Villwock had a good chance on a run-up and Berkowitz also sent a shot at the keeper.

But Berg struck next off a counterattack in the 31st minute. Jacobs again provided a great leadup, finding Brianna Bratz, who beat the keeper low right for an insurance tally.

Backs against the wall, the Blue Streaks lashed out with chance after chance. Avery Berner sent a shot off the post, Julia Niehaus fired a high surprise shot high, and Berkowitz pressured the visitors. But every chance resulted in an excruciating miss.

The first 15 minutes of the second half proved to be just as fruitless for JCU, though all of the action occurred in the attacking third of the field.

Near the midpoint of the half, the Student Princes started to fire back on offense, finding some offensive chances. But JCU quickly countered with opportunities, though none found twine.

The Blue Streaks kept pressing, continuing to just miss on opportunities, even into the final couple minutes.

JCU dominated the shots, 21-7, and enjoyed a 6-2 margin in shots on goal.
