Women's Soccer Sputters in Non-Conference Loss at Fredonia State

The Blue Devils sunk the visitors with 3 unanswered goals

FREDONIA, N.Y. – The offense was clicking for John Carroll Women's Soccer on Saturday afternoon, but the defense couldn't hold firm.

The Blue Streaks netted two goals for the second time this season, but surrendered three goals, also for just the second time.

Fredonia State conquered John Carroll in non-conference play, 3-2.

In the fifth minute, the visitors got on the board first. JCU threatened to get the ball into the crease, but Fredonia State cleared it back. That is, until Julia Niehaus lofted a gorgeous shot from way deep, beating the keeper high. 

The Blue Streaks added another in the 24th minute on an opportunistic shot. Abby Walker lofted in a pass to the egde of the box, headed in the air by Gracie Villwock towards Brooke Berkowitz. A Blue Devil tried to get it out of harm's way, but didn't get all of the ball, which bounded to Villwock. The sophomore sent it back to Berkowitz, who took a touch before left footing a fantastic shot low right past the keeper. 

The visitors were not the only ones with chances in the opening frame. Madison Skeese made two saves in the first half before turning it over to Lola Hall for the second. 

The teams traded chances at the start of the second half. But it was the Blue Devils striking first in the 67th minute. A masterful through ball split the JCU defense, and Bronwyn Madden raced into a one-on-one chance against the JCU keeper and scored.

The equalizer came in the 77th minute. The Blue Devils managed to get the ball into the box, and after a failed JCU clear, Fredonia's Annika Tamppari right-footed a quick shot that surprised the keeper low right. 

The heartbreaking end for JCU occurred in the 87th minute. Anna Ratchuk settled a centering pass from Gabby Irwin and managed to beat the keeper on a tricky shot. JCU couldn't respond.

Head Coach Michael Marich played a deep bench, as 22 Blue Streaks saw playing time. Fredonia State outshot JCU, 22-17, including 8-7 in shots on goal.
