Non-Conference Play Ends with Trying Loss for Men's Soccer

JCU carries a 3-4-2 mark into NCAC play next weekend

WESTERVILLE – Surpassing the midway mark of the season and playing the final non-conference game of the campaign, John Carroll Men's Soccer hoped for a result to spur them forward into the second half.

The Blue Streaks did not get the spark.

In a difficult result, John Carroll dropped a 2-1 decision to Otterbein.

The hosts got on the board first in the eighth minute. Otterbein's Nate Werthmuller sent in a nice free kick that Mitch Wheeler headed past the keeper on a nice setpiece.

The Blue Streaks responded with a setpiece goal of their own in the 20th minute. Rafa De La Barrera slotted a picture-perfect pass into the box. Maurio Powell worked his way past physical Otterbein defenders in the box to head in the tying tally.

The teams went into the break deadlocked at one goal apiece. The teams each managed 6 shots, and neither had a shot on goal after the JCU's tying goal.

Otterbein broke the deadlock in the 60th minute on a free kick following a pair of JCU yellow cards. Once again, it was Werthmuller sending in a perfect ball to the waiting head of Wheeler for a goal.

The second half proved to be a physical affair with more yellows than shots on goals. The Cardinals won the war of attrition in the end. Shot totals were even in the end, at 11 apiece.
