Volleyball Falters Against Muskingum in Midweek Non-Conference Action

The Blue Streaks couldn't upend the OAC juggernaut

NEW CONCORD – A stretch of tough matches has confronted John Carroll Volleyball this week.

The Blue Streaks headed down to face an old foe, a juggernaut of Ohio Athletic Conference volleyball, on Wednesday evening.

The Fighting Muskies looked quite strong while advancing to 13-3 on the year, downing JCU in four sets, 25-23, 25-16, 18-25, 25-19.

The teams played to a 9-9 deadlock in the first set before the hosts broke away with a 7-point run. JCU mounted a furious rally and got within a point on a couple occasions. But despite a few late Natalie Glowe kills, JCU couldn't tie it.

The second set played out much as the first. After playing to a 10-all set, Muskingum broke through for a 5-0 run. A 7-point run finished it with less drama than in the first set, however.

In a major departure, the Blue Streaks owned the midway mark of the third stanza. With Olivia Mogyordy serving, JCU authored a 10-0 run in impressive fashion, as Mary Kate Sheehan hammered three straight kills at one point. JCU showed great fight in forcing a fourth set.

Once again, the teams battled to a 10-10 draw. Muskingum's takeover was less noticeable, a couple points here, a couple there. The Fighting Muskies helped finish it off with a 4-point run, as JCU couldn't rebound from a 23-16 margin.

JCU's offense thrived in the first and third sets, limiting the errors. But mistakes in the second and fourth set helped lead to the loss. Glowe (12), Hailey Williams (11), and Sheehan (10) all managed double-digit kills.

Tess Murray led the way with 25 assists. Laney Higgins registered a career-best 13 assists. Glowe topped the team with 20 digs, Mogyordy nabbed 19, and Elena Montenegro tallied 11, a season high.
