SEWANEE, Tenn. – The heat wasn't the only thing beating the Blue Streaks as they traveled to Tennessee to face Sewanee, aka the University of the South, this Labor Day weekend.

The Tigers took a 5-1 victory over John Carroll on Saturday afternoon. 

With the loss, John Carroll Field Hockey drops to 0-2 on the year.

A foul-heavy first quarter gave way to a slow start. The Tigers were able to capitalize on this and got the first point on the board at 10:06 off of a penalty corner. John Carroll was unable to make anything happen this quarter. 

The heat must have gotten to both teams, as it was a slow start to the second quarter. The Tigers notched a point on the board late in the quarter, giving them a 2-0 lead going into the half.

The Streaks were ready to come out strong after the half. Sewanee started off the half with a yellow card, giving the Streaks two minutes of woman-up play. Although they were unable to capitalize during that, JCU started to pick up momentum at the end of the quarter.

Kierra Maxie got the Streaks on the board at 43:40, lessening the gap and making it a 1-goal game. However, the Tigers answered back less than a minute later, ending the third quarter with a 2-goal lead on the Streaks. 

The heat intensified as the Streaks' fatigue began to set in. The theme of the game seemed to be "foul-heavy", and that didn't stop in the fourth quarter. Sewanee tallied two more yellow cards this quarter. However, with zero shots, the visitors were unable to capitalize.

The Tigers added another goal late in the fourth quarter before pounding it home one final time, scoring with just seconds remaining to put the game away. The Streaks were only able to notch one point this afternoon and only two shots, giving Sewanee the 5-1 victory. 

Heading down South introduced the Streaks to a new kind of play with fouls aplenty. Fouls seemed to carry through this game, with Sewanee ending with 56 fouls to John Carroll's 28.

Hilgendorf had a solid game in net with 6 saves on the day.
