Volleyball Conquers Pair of Old OAC Foes at Mount Union Tournament

Kallan Hrics tied a career high with 8 blocks vs. Marietta

ALLIANCE – Against a pair of former conference foes, John Carroll Volleyball played excellently.

The Blue Streaks dominated former Ohio Athletic Conference rivals Marietta College and the University of Mount Union on Saturday at the Mount Union Invitational.

JCU bested Marietta, 25-23, 25-29, 14-25, 25-13. Then, the Blue Streaks toppled the hosts, 25-21, 25-20, 25-22. 

JCU vs. Marietta
The Pioneers started solidly, getting out to a 20-17 lead, resulting in a JCU timeout. The break proved effective, as the Blue Streaks fired up a 7-1 run highlighted by Hailey Williams. The Pioneers managed to tie it up at 23-all, but Mary Kate Sheehan and Natalie Glowe notched kills to secure the set.

Early in the second set, the Blue Streaks took control as Glowe got on a roll with a pair of service aces to fire up an 11-5 lead. John Carroll never surrendered control, rolling late with strong play up front led by Williams.

In the third set, the Pioneers fired out of the gate and never looked back. Marietta forced a fourth set with a fairly dominant victory, 25-13. 

Showcasing a desire to be done with the match, John Carroll led wire-to-wire. JCU fired up a 12-6 lead, leading to a Marietta timeout. A 10-4 JCU run kept up the pressure, and the Pios could not recover.

Individually, Glowe topped the attack with 18 kills along with 16 digs. Tess Murray helped to make it happen with 25 assists. Olivia Mogyordy tabbed a team-best 18 digs. Kallan Hrics tied for a career best with 8 block assists (JCU notched 10 as a team). 

JCU vs. Mount Union
The opening set of the old rivalry match started even until JCU tabbed a 4-point run to take momentum on the backs of Hailey Williams and Khloe Trivoli. John Carroll never relented down the stretch, looking especially strong up front with a number of blocks. A Trivoli kill helped to finish off the Purple Raiders, 25-21. 

In response, the hosts found their footing in the second set. Mount Union got out to a 13-8 lead before JCU came alive. A 5-0 run tied it at 13 and leading to a Mount Union timeout. The break did not help, as Kallan Hrics & Co. continued the run with five more points before Mount Union responded. But with an 18-13 lead, JCU had all the room it needed. Hrics, Williams, and Glowe all contributed significant kills en route to a 25-20 conquest.

Sensing blood in the water, John Carroll looked to sink the Purple Raiders early with a 12-6 run. After the timeout, Mount Union refused to surrender, slowly striking back. The Purple Raiders finally evened it up at 18-all. But the Blue Streaks ultimately sailed to victory, as Glowe tabbed three kills and John Carroll showcased that needed killer instinct. 

Glowe topped the offense with 16 kills, with Tess Murray firing up 20 assists. Olivia Mogyordy tabbed 17 digs to lead the backline. JCU registered an impressive .286 hitting percentage.

Next Up
The Blue Streaks will be back at home on Tuesday, making the program's first appearance of the year on Rock Entertainment Sports Network. JCU will host Allegheny at 7:05 pm at the Tony DeCarlo Varsity Center.
