The Tony DeCarlo Varsity Center is the home of John Carroll University Men's Basketball, Women's Basketball, Volleyball, and Wrestling. The facility bears the name of the late JCU legend, Tony DeCarlo '66G.Â
The facility enjoys a long history dating back to 1957, when the John Carroll Gymnasium was finished. The $1.5 million facility was christened on December 4, 1957, as the Blue Streaks hosted Xavier University. Carroll Gym served the Blue Streaks well for many, many years.Â
In 2002, the gym was revamped and improved, renamed as the Tony DeCarlo Varsity Center. The new-look gym debuted on October 15, 2002 as JCU Women's Volleyball hosted Mount Union in OAC action. The 1,354-seat facility features chair-back bleacher seating on the ground level, bench-back bleacher seating in the upper levels, scoreboards, and a press row area. Max capacity for games (including standing room) is 2,334. Max capacity for events with gym floor seating is 2,113.Â
In the years since, renovations have been completed to ensure the facility remains a beautiful, modern home for basketball, volleyball, and wrestling. In 2019, a new gym floor was laid down and bright new lights were installed.Â
The facility is named after Tony DeCarlo '66G, a JCU Athletics legend. DeCarlo first made his mark as the first wrestling coach in school history, leading the Blue Streaks to 21 consecutive Presidents Athletic Conference Championships and 11 National Catholic Invitational Tournament crowns during his tenure from 1964-87.
In August 1986, DeCarlo assumed the role of athletic director, a job he held until 2004. Later in 1986, DeCarlo became the head football coach. From 1987-98, DeCarlo tallied 90 wins (most by any coach in JCU football history) and led the Blue Streaks to two OAC titles and two NCAA Division III playoff appearances. He accomplished a great legacy not only as a coach, but as athletic director, overseeing the addition of Schweickert and Bracken Fields, Don Shula Stadium, and the DeCarlo Varsity Center.Â
The court bears the name of another JCU legend – Mike Moran. The hardwood was dedicated as Mike Moran Court on February 18, 2017 prior to an OAC showdown and regular season finale vs. Capital. Moran led the Men's Basketball program for 25 years, finishing as the winningest coach in program history with 460 victories, adding 10 OAC regular-season titles, 4 OAC Tournament Championships, and 12 NCAA Tournament appearances. He was induced into the Ohio Basketball Hall of Fame in 2020.Â
