Chet Lauer '14 enters his third year as an assistant coach with JCU Baseball during the 2021-22 academic year.
Lauer works primarily with the hitters, catchers, and infielders, and assists with recruiting and practice/game scheduling. Also, he will be taking on a sports operation role where he will be assisting other sports at JCU.
Lauer was a team captain of the 2014 OAC Championship team. He hit 4-4 in the championship game in a 6-3 win over Baldwin Wallace. In 2014, he broke the single season hits record hitting .416 his senior season at catcher. He earned ABCA Rawlings 1st team All American, 1st team all Mideast Region, and 1st team Al- OAC honors. Defensively, he is first all time in career fielding percentage standing at .993 in 362 chances playing catcher, third base, and first base.
In 2011 and 2012 at Cuyahoga Community College, Lauer helped lead the team to back-to-back conference tournament championships in the OCCAC hitting for a .382 batting average. He is a Saint Ignatius graduate of 2009 where he was the catcher for the State Final Four Wildcats and teammates with JCU assistant coach Michael Burke.
Chet also played post high school at IMG Academy in Florida, earning the sportsmanship award for the baseball program. After graduating from John Carroll, Chet continued his baseball career and played professionally overseas in France, Australia, and Austria for three seasons. In 2017, he was named European All Star, an International top hitter, and won a Gold Glove at catcher by the Confederation of European Baseball.
He served as an assistant coach at St. Edward and Release Baseball from 2016-2019, working with catchers, hitters, and infielders.
Chet’s dad, Tom Lauer, played at John Carroll under Dr. Jerry Schweickert '60 and was named team mvp and an All-PAC outfielder in 1981, and uncle Jim Lauer was an All-PAC center for the 1986 JCU football team.
Chet is a 2014 graduate of John Carroll University, where he earned a Bachelor Degree in Communications.
