Matt Baker enters his third season with the John Carroll University football program in the 2022-23 academic year as an assistant coach. Prior to the 2022 season, Baker was promoted to offensive coordinator.
In Baker's first season, quarterback Jake Floriea threw for 523 yards and 7 touchdowns, earning Honorable Mention All-OAC. Brendan Fugh topped the team with 17 catches for 194 yards and 2 TDs, earning All-OAC status. Devin Limerick transitioned from running back to wideout and hauled in 12 passes for 142 yards and 2 TDs, getting Honorable Mention All-OAC.
In his season season, Floriea threw for 2,515 yards and 19 touchdowns and earned Honorable Mention All-OAC status. Left tackle Blake Herideen and wideout Brennan Fugh earned First Team All-OAC honors, Anthony Amata garnered Second Team status, and Devin Limerick snagged Honorable Mention distinction. Fugh also earned D3football.com All-Region recognition, while Limerick was an OAC Scholar Athlete of the Month.
Baker spent four years as a quarterback in the National Football League, spending time with the Dallas Cowboys, New Orleans Saints, Arizona Cardinals, Miami Dolphins, and Buffalo Bills. During his time in the NFL, he played under Super Bowl winning head coaches Bill Parcells and Sean Payton.
Prior to John Carroll, Baker spent three years coaching in the FBS, first as a graduate assistant with the University of Mississippi (Ole Miss) from 2010-11, and then Western Michigan University (2019). While coaching the Rebels, he spent a season as a graduate assistant working with the wide receivers and quarterbacks. In his return to coaching this past year with the Broncos, he served as a quality control coordinator coaching quarterbacks.
During tenure at Western Michigan, Baker worked closely with starting quarterback Jon Wassink, a 2019 Wuerffel Award Winner (given to a player who exemplifies academic, athletic, and service excellence).
From 2011-2018, Baker stepped away from coaching to explore management roles in the energy business. He returned in 2019 with Western Michigan.
Baker is a 2006 graduate of the University of North Carolina and is from Rochester Hills, Michigan, where he graduated from Brother Rice in 2001.
