With the help of its medley and free relays, John Carroll beat Hiram College, 112-106, in University Heights Friday evening.
As it was the last home meet of the season for the Blue Streaks and senior night, John Carroll was hoping to close out its home schedule with a win. JCU started off with a strong win in the 200 Yard Medley Relay. The men's "A" relay team was victorious, with Blake Pinchot (Solon, OH, Solon), David Perchinske (Solon, OH, Solon), Brendan Carey (Chicago, IL, Mount Carmel)and Ryan Flaherty (Pittsburgh, PA, Bethel Park) combining for a time of 1:57.75.
The Blue Streaks had one individual winner in the swimming events. Freshman Alex Vereshchagin (Solon, OH, Solon) won the 50 Yard Freestyle, with a time of 22.83. He just edged teammate David Perchinske (Solon, OH, Solon), who had a final time of 22.91.
However, the biggest victory of the night came during the Men's 200 Yard Freestyle Relay. Nicholas Grady (Cleveland, OH, St. Ignatius), Eric Davis (Canfield, OH, Canfield), Tony Russo (Solon, OH, Solon)and Vereshchagin combined for the Blue Streaks first place finish (1:33.46). The JCU "B" relay team, consisting of Andy Petraska, Kevin Walsh (Fair Haven, NJ, Rumson), John Reynolds (Chicago, IL, St. Ignatius College Prep)and Ryan Tipping (Landsowne, PA, St. Joseph's Preparatory School), finished second and gave the men's team the extra points it needed to win the meet.
In diving, the men's Stanton Kochanek (Pittsburgh, PA, Mt. Lebanon) finshed first in the 1 meter diving (206.15) and the 3 meter diving (197.20).
With the win, John Carroll's men's team is now 4-6 overall.
