Thor Erikson (left) and Corey Rider (#22) combined on a play that produced John Carroll's first goal of the 2009 OAC schedule
John Carroll broke a three-match scoring drought, but still needed a save on a breakaway chance late in the second overtime to preserve a 1-1 tie against Heidelberg Wednesday afternoon in an Ohio Athletic Conference contest staged at Shula Stadium.
Box Score
The Blue Streaks had suffered three consecutive shutouts to open the 2009 league schedule, but finally broke through in the 27th minute when
Corey Rider (Vermilion, OH, Vermilion) finished off a cross from Thor Erikson to stake JCU a 1-0 lead.
Heidelberg was able to answer in the final five minutes of the opening period. Grant Beck fed a pass along the end line to an unmarked Cory Buhrman, who found the upper right corner from five yards out for the equalizer at 41:09.
The score stayed tied the remainder of the way despite the two teams combining for 16 shots in the second period and overtime sessions.
After JCU's
Jake Milli (North Royalton, OH, Walsh Jesuit) and
Michael Zumerling (Bridgeville, PA, Chartiers Valley) both had chances late in the second overtime, Heidelberg appeared poised to send the Blue Streaks to a disappointing defeat when Michael Juart had a breakaway opportunity in the closing seconds. But freshman keeper
Geoff Bloom (Bothell, WA, Bishop Blanchet) , making his first career start in place of injured regulars
Matt DeMarchi (Hudson, OH, Walsh Jesuit) and
Mike Telzrow (Cleveland, OH, Lutheran West), dove in front of a low shot to preserve the tie.
The Streaks held a 13-12 shot advantage, and an 8-2 edge in corner kicks.
John Carroll moves to 6-5-4 overall and 0-2-2 in the OAC, while Heidelberg's record stands at 7-4-2 and 2-1-1 in league play.
