Game 2 vs. Capital
John Carroll posted back-to-back shutouts to sweep visiting Capital Friday afternoon in an Ohio Athletic Conference twinbill held at Bracken Field.
Brittany Danilov tossed a two-hitter in the opener to lead John Carroll to a 3-0 victory. In the nightcap, Sam Thompson followed suit with a four-hitter to complete the sweep with a 2-0 win.
While Danilov would shutdown the Crusaders' offense with a season-and career-high nine strikeouts, the Blue Streaks would score the only run it needed in the first inning. With two outs, Jamie Smrdel doubled home Julie Marlowe from second base for the first run of the game.
Insurance would come in the form of a two-run home run by Laura Boselovic off of reigning OAC Pitcher of the Week Brittany Stefano in the second inning.
Armed with a 3-0 lead, Danilov would make the advantage stand by allowing just a single in the fifth inning and a two-out double in the seventh. Those were the only two baserunners she allowed all game in improving to 13-5 on the year. Danilov has now tied the school record for single season pitching victories.
Thompson was just as impressive in the second game, allowing four hits and walking one while striking out three for her second consecutive shutout.
The offense was not overpowering but opportunistic. In the third inning, with Marlowe at second base, Capital elected to intentionally walk Jamie Smrdel. Angela Vistocco would make them pay for that decision as she laced an RBI double to score Marlowe for the first run.
The second and final run was driven in by jenny Eden, whose RBI double scored Olivia Matthews from seccond.
Thompson improved to 5-2 on the year.
John Carroll is now 21-7 overall and 8-4 (3rd place) in the OAC.
