John Carroll Moves Into Second Place In The OAC By Sweeping Wilimgton

Jamie Smrdel had three RBI to help lead John Carroll's come-from-behind effort in game two against Wilmington to complete a sweep

John Carroll moved into a tie for second place in the OAC and completed a perfect week by sweeping Wilmington Saturday afternoon in Wilmington, Ohio.

The sweep was the third in as many days for the Blue Streaks, putting their record for the week at 6-0.

The first game was a no-doubter as the Streaks rolled to an 8-0 win. In the nightcap, the Streaks rallied from a 4-1 deficit to win, 8-4.

Freshman brittany Danilov was dominant once again in the opener, setting her career high strikeout total for the second time in as many days. She struck out ten and allowed just two hits in winning her school record 14th game of the season.

The offense took a while to warm up, but once it did, it caught fire. It was a 0-0 game until the fifth inning. After a lead-off walk to Olivia Matthews, Laura Boselovic crushed an RBI double to plate the first run of the game. Jamie Colley pinch ran for Boselovic, and would score the second run on a ground out.

Sam Thompson gave JCU a 3-0 lead with a solo home run in the sixth, and then the Blue Streaks erupted for four runs in the seventh to put the game out of reach. The big blow was a two RBI triple by Julie Marlowe.

In the second game, Wilmington would score once in the first and three more times in the second to take a 4-1 lead. Danilov come on relief and shut down the Quakers' offense, allowing four hits and no runs in her six innings of work.

The John Carroll bats would fight back. Jamie Smrdel started the rally with an RBI single in the third that cut the Wilmington lead to 4-2. 

The Streaks would take back the lead in the fourth inning with four runs. Marlowe cut the elad to 4-3 with a run scoring single, and then Michelle Murphy put the Streaks ahead for good with a two run home run. Angela Vistocco later singled home the final run of the inning.

For insurance, Smrdel and Vistocco had run scoring hits in the sixth inning to ice the sweep.

Danilov improved to 15-5 with the win.

John Carroll is now a program best 23-7 after 30 games and has improved to 10-4 in the OAC. Ohio Northern leads the league at 12-2, while JCU and Muskingum are tied for second at 10-4.
