The John Carroll softball team made history, but will have to do so again Sunday to keep its dreams alive of winning an Ohio Athletic Conference title.
History was made when JCU won its first ever OAC Tournament game by rallying for a 6-2 win over Mount Union in its opening game. The Streaks trailed early, 2-0, but scored six unaswered to defeat the Purple Raiders.
Mount Union came up with single tallies in the first and second inning to take a 2-0 lead. The Blue Streaks would come up with a pair of runs in the third inning. With two on and one out, Michelle Murphy plated Jenny Eden and Julie Marlowe with a double.
JCU would take its first lead in the bottom of the fourth on a RBI single by Laura Boselovic that scored Angela Vistocco.
Eden would break the game open in the sixth when she delivered a bases cleaing two-out double to push John Carroll's lead to four runs.
Brittany Danilov went seven innings and allowed seven hits, two runs (one earned), walking none and striking out six. She improved to 20-5 with the win.
In its second game, John Carroll would face host and top seeded Ohio Northern. In a match-up of opening game winners (ONU defeated Muskingum, 8-4), the Polar Bears would break open a 1-1 tie with three late runs to get past the Blue Streaks, 4-1.
Erin Riccardi's fourth inning solo home run was the lone Blue Streak tally on the scoreboard.
John Carroll's loss and Mount Union's 4-3 win over Muskingum to end day one sets up a rematch in an elimination game Sunday at 11 am with Mount Union. The winner will advance to face Ohio Northern at 1:00 pm. Both JCU and Mount Union would have to beat Ohio Northern twice to claim the OAC title.
