Jeffrey Javorek (Chesterland, OH, West Geauga) threw five touchdown passes in his first career start to lead John Carroll to a 43-29 victory over Baldwin-Wallace Saturday night in the Ohio Athletic Conference opener for both schools at Don Shula Stadium.
Box Score
It was a night where both history was made and revenge was exacted for John Carroll. The 43 points represent the most scored by a John Carroll team against Baldwin-Wallace, and the 72 combined points scored are the most in the history of the series which dates back to 1921.
The revenge for the Blue Streaks came in the form of erasing memories of a 17-7 fourth quarter lead lost in last year's meeting that Baldwin-Wallace eventually won, 21-17.
John Carroll opened the scoring when Javorek tossed the first of his touchdown passes at the 7:34 mark in the first quarter. JCU recovered a fumbled punt and needed just four plays to traverse 18 yards, capped by a Javorek strike to
Nick Spahar (Willowick, OH, Mentor Lake Catholic) from four yards out. The extra point was missed, however, leaving the score at 6-0.
Baldwin-Wallace would rally with the next ten points. John McGraw dove in from three yards away to put the finishing touches on a 62-yard, 10-play drive. Brad Pollock added a 20-yard field goal early in the second quarter to push the B-W advantage to 10-6.
The Blue Streaks would close the first half by scoring the final ten points.
DaQuan Grobsmith's (Syracuse, NY, Bishop Ludden) 21-yard touchdown catch-and-run would put the home team ahead at 13-6 with 9:19 on the second quarter clock. Freshman
Bradley Marchese's (Columbus, OH, Saint Charles Prep) 25-yard field goal as time expired gave JCU a 16-10 lead at the break.
Baldwin-Wallace came out firing in the second half. The Yellow Jackets needed just nine plays to move the length of the field, and used a nine-yard run by McGraw to tie the score at 16-16. As a recurring theme for the night, the extra point was missed to leave the score knotted at 16-16.
Turnovers would lead to the next two scores for the Blue Streaks. JCU turned one fumble into a 13-yard
Frank Ross (Canfield, OH, Canfield) touchdown reception for a 23-16 lead, and used an interception to set up a
Scottie Williams (Kent, OH, Kent Theodore Roosevelt) touchdown catch.
Ahead 30-16, the Blue Streaks were able to keep Baldwin-Wallace at a one-touchdown arm's length the remainder of the night. Following a Kyrell Crook two-yard run by the visitors, Williams would score his second touchdown of the evening on a seven-yard reception for a 36-23 John Carroll lead with 14:50 left in the contest.
The Yellow Jackets once again pulled to within seven points when John Myers hauled in a seven-yard pass from Anthony Gardner with just under seven minutes to play, but the extra point attempt was botched to leave the margin at seven.
John Carroll kept possession of the ball until just under two minutes left to play, but when the drive stalled, punter
Karl Roshong (Canton, OH, Perry) was able to bury a punt at the one-yard line. Two plays later,
Ken Bevington (Mentor, OH, Middlefield Cardinal) dislodged the ball from Gardner, setting up
Kenneth Owens (Cleveland, OH, Shaker Heights) for the final touchdown of the night -- a six-yard run that iced the victory.
John Carroll (1-1, 1-0 OAC), which broke a five-game losing streak that dated back to last season, was led by Javorek, who was 30-51 for 209 yards with five touchdowns and no interceptions. Williams had a career night with 11 catches for 129 yards and two scores.
On defense, the Blue Streaks came up with six turnovers (four fumbles, two interceptions) and four sacks.
Joe Cigas (Brooklyn Heights, OH, Cleveland Benedictine) had both picks, returning one for 50 yards, and
C.J. Seitzinger (Bethel Park, PA, Bethel Park) and
Michael O'Neal (Dallas, TX, Jesuit College Prep) both had double digit tackle totals to go along with a one fumble recovered.
Baldwin-Wallace (0-2, 0-1 OAC) was led by Gardner, who was 25-36 for 264 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions. Tim Miker was the leading ball carrier with 58 yards, while McGraw contributed 46 yards and two touchdowns on the ground to go with a team-high five catches for 24 yards.
