Excellent First Day Helps JCU Weather Storm To Repeat As Mount Union Invitational Champion

A.J. Spaulding fought the weather for a round of 78 Monday, moving him into a tie for 18th place at the Mount Union Invitational
An excellent first day helped John Carroll weather both an actual storm and the Lake Erie Storm to successfully defend its title at the Mount Union Fall Invitational played Sunday and Monday at Tannenhauf Golf Course and Alliance Country Club in Alliance, Ohio.

Final Results

John Carroll had a tremendous first day score if 291 to open a six-stroke lead over Baldwin-Wallace at 297. But the second day brought in bad weather, and a rally by Lake Erie College. John Carroll's 306 was bested by Lake Erie's 296, but the Blue Streaks still won the title with a 597 -- one stroke ahead of Lake Erie at 598.

Otterbein (607), Baldwin-Wallace (610) and Mount Union (614) rounded out the top five in the 11-team field.

JCU senior Blake Furgerson (Concord, OH, Lakewood St. Edward) won the event with a score of 139, including the lone under 70-round of the two-day tournament. His three-under-par total was seven strokes better than Steve Guerrieri of Mount Union.

All the Blue Streaks were in the medal hunt on the first day but all not named Furgerson had a tough second day. Joe Zucker (Cleveland,OH, St. Ignatius) finished tied for 13th with a 152 (72-80), A.J. Spalding (Stow, OH, Cuya. Falls Walsh Jesuit) tied for 18th with a score of 154 (76-78), and both Jeff Deal (Willoughby, OH, Willoughby South) (73-82) and Michael Witmer(75-80) tied for 23rd at 155.

Sam Scala competed as an individual and finished tied for 15th at 153 (76-77).

This was John Carroll's third win of the fall in five events, with two third place finishes in the other tournaments.
